In western culture, we seldom pay attention to the meanings of names we often give people “nicknames” based on their personalities and character traits. In a similar way, names given in biblical times had much to say about the character, prophetic calling, or current circumstances at the time of a person’s birth. For instance, Jacob’s name, (who stole the firstborn blessing from Esau) means “supplanter” (or trickster). God later changed his name to Israel, which means “he will be a prince with God” or “one that prevails with God.”

Every Bible name has a meaning. So much so, that sometimes when God changed the nature of a person He also changed his or her name. For example, when Abram believed God’s promise of a son, God changed his name to Abraham and changed his wife’s name from Sarai to Sarah. Years later, after the angel of the Lord had wrestled with him all night, Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. In the New Testament, Saul of Tarsus, whose name meant “demanded,” came to be known as Paul, which means “little.” And this is what the greatest apostle became in his own eyes as he looked increasingly upon the greatness of Christ.  It’s amazing how often a Bible character lives up to the meaning of his or her name. Sometimes, as in the case of Paul, they deliberately took a name that meant what they wanted to be.

The Exhaustive Dictionary of Bible Names came into existence as a result of each author’s interest in the meaning of places and persons in Bible literature. For some years they shared their research notes with each other, for neither was able to find a single book that contained all the information they wanted. Recently they realized that together they had acquired a wealth of research material that would undoubtedly help others who shared their interests. It was then that they decided to put the material into book form and seek publication...

About the Authors

Judson Cornwall has been in active ministry for sixty-six years. He pastored churches for more than 30 years, taught in Bible Schools in Washington and Texas and has been a guest lecturer in church Bible schools through America, Germany, and England. For the past 30 years he has traveled in five of the six continents of the world and spent time teaching in thirty countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Dr. Cornwall is a teacher and a published author who has written 45 books. Some of them have been translated into as many as 15 languages. He did his undergraduate work at Southern California College. His Doctorate degree was taken at Fountain Gate Bible College, Dallas, Texas.

Stelman Smith has been in active ministry since 1969. He has served the body of Christ as a police chaplain, counselor, pastor, and evangelist. Dr. Smith is retired from the police department and is an active Bible teacher and author who enjoys sharing God’s Word with the Body of Christ. His degrees are from Trinity Theological Seminary, Newburg, Indiana.
