Overview

Everyone who speaks or preaches needs a ready supply of thought-provoking and illustrative resource material. The Speaker's Quote Book provides the attention-getting story or that “just right” quote that adds depth to any sermon or presentation.

Most people are familiar with Emerson's remark about the person who builds a better mousetrap. Pastors and speakers might be surprised to know that the full quote attributed to him states:

If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he builds his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.

This and over 4,500 more quotes, stories, anecdotes, and illustrations from The Speaker's Quote Book will help the pastor prepare a better sermon or the speaker present a better speech. This new collection of both contemporary and classic material puts a wealth of interest-building illustrations at one's fingertips.

“A peevish old fellow boarded a train, occupied the best seat, and then tried to reserve another seat for himself by placing his luggage on it. Just before the crowded vehicle started, a teenage boy came running up and jumped aboard. ‘This car is full,’ said the man irritably; ‘that seat next to me is reserved for a friend of mine who has put his bag there.’ The youth paid no attention but sat down saying, ‘All right, I’ll stay here until he comes.’ He placed the suitcase on his knee while the elderly man glared at him in vain. Of course, the ‘friend’ didn’t appear, and soon the train began to move. As it glided past the platform, the young fellow tossed the bag through the open window remarking, ‘Apparently your friend has missed the train. We mustn’t let him lose his luggage too!’” (Page 345)

“If you want to be remembered after you’re dead, write something worth reading, or do something worth writing about.” (Page 9)

“An evangelist is a nobody who is seeking to tell everybody about Somebody who can help change anybody.” (Page 133)

“If you can’t get what you want, want what you can get!” (Page 12)

“He who is the Bread of Life began His ministry hungering. He who is the Water of Life ended His ministry thirsting. Christ hungered as a man, yet fed the hungry as God. He was weary, yet He is our rest. He paid tribute, yet He is the King. He was called a devil, but He cast out demons. He prayed, yet He hears prayer. He wept, and He dries our tears. He was sold for thirty pieces of silver, yet He redeems sinners. He was led as a lamb to His slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd. He gave His life, and by dying He destroyed death.” (Page 53)
