David's second wife, Abigail, deserves more press than she has gotten. No exegetical book exists on the current market covering her amazing persona, story, and message. It's set out in 1 Samuel 25, and the author here attempts to spell out why her message was crucial to David's coming kingdom, to the church of all ages, and to believers in the twenty-first century. She speaks in some detail of the terms of the Davidic Covenant, the grand advancement of David's kingdom, the certainty of God's protection of David during the following forty years when he would reign over Israel, how it would be that David--and all believers--can be eternally judged righteous in God's sight, why David should turn away from attempting to build his own kingdom rather than leaving that business to the Lord, and assuring him that God would give, or bestow, the kingdom to David and all who believe.
“Mark Belz has written a beautiful exploration of one of the most dramatic episodes in the Bible (1 Sam 25) that also features one of Scripture’s wisest women—Abigail. In elegant language, Belz teases out the theology and lessons of that moment in history in a book that is a pleasure to read.”
—Dan Doriani, professor of biblical theology, Covenant Seminary
“Readers will share my excitement to read a book unpacking insights into the life of Abigail. Mark Belz’s analysis of the actions of David and Abigail are significant in understanding the role this relationship played in the outworking of God’s plan in history. It may also bring to mind the impact of ‘Abigails’ in our lives that God may have brought at just the right time. A very thought-provoking read.”

“Who would have guessed that there is so much to be learned from the story of Abigail, her action, and her inspired speech to David in 1 Samuel 25? Mark Belz employs an array of supporting Scripture, and his insights into human nature are informed by his experiences as an attorney. But this book is not just about Abigail. It is about me and about you. But most of all it is about the sovereign grace of our amazing God.”
—William S. Barker, professor emeritus of church history, Westminster Theological Seminary
