Richard Chenevix Trench (1807–1886) graduated from Trinity College in Cambridge in 1829. A well-respected Irish poet, Trench wrote extensively on lexicology, semantics, and philology, bringing attention to the contemporary conventions of writing that necessitated the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, a standard for English grammar and writing. He was appointed as Dean of Westminster College from 1856 until his appointment as Archbishop over Dublin in 1864. He wrote extensive topical commentaries on the New Testament as well as on English and Latin poetry. He lectured and preached widely from Westminster to King’s College.
