Overview

Would you like to have a creative resource that offers form and freedom for worship planning? Do you have a desire to weave more Scripture into your worship services? Would you like to follow the cycles and seasons of the Christian Year? If you can relate to these questions, Lectionary Journey is a great resource for you! Following the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), this resource provides integrated, Scripture-based calls to worship, prayers, and affirmations of faith for each Sunday and for special days in the Christian Year, over the three-year lectionary cycle. This resource is of great benefit even if your church does not follow the RCL in its preaching. Lectionary Journey ensures that we are being called into worship, praying, and affirming our faith through the word. It allows Scripture to be woven throughout our corporate worship services, letting its language, narrative, metaphors, themes, teachings, truths, and paradigms form and shape us, week after week. Worship planners will find this resource to be of benefit as an annual guide for stewarding God's story, a weekly guide for planning corporate worship, a regular source of spiritual formation, and an ecumenical resource that fosters community within the body of Christ.

  • Provides integrated, Scripture-based calls to worship.
  • Ensures that we are being called into worship.
  • Allows Scripture to be woven throughout our corporate worship services.
In Lectionary Journey, Paxson Jeancake rightly posits that ‘churches do not actually have much Scripture woven into the fabric of their worship services.’ The church’s worship by which believers are spiritually formed into being Christ-like should be infused with God’s word. Feasting on Christ the living Word, we become Christ, broken for the life of the world. Nothing is of greater importance than that. This is an essential and beneficial resource for worship leaders.

—James R. Hart, President, Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies

Those of us in the weekly grind of planning and leading worship services are always clamoring for accessible resources that are faithful to the Scriptures and connected to liturgical rhythms of the year. A resource like this is hard to short-circuit or quickly manufacture. It can only come from someone who has been in the grind with us for a long time. What a blessing!

—Zac Hicks, author of The Worship Pastor

One of the greatest needs of the modern church is to recover the centrality of the word of God in its worship—not only in its preaching, but in its character from beginning to end. Scripture gives us the words to speak throughout corporate worship that far exceeds our own devising and ultimately drives the narrative of the gospel in real time. Jeancake has done a masterful job of providing Christian worshipers with a resource to move from our words to God’s words. I highly recommend its use for every worship planner.

—Constance M. Cherry, Professor, Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies, author of The Worship Architect

Paxson Jeancake is the Director of Worship at Covenant Church in Palm Bay, Florida. He is the author of The Art of Worship: Opening Our Eyes to the Beauty of the Gospel, a contributor to Speaking the Truth in Love: The Theology of John M. Frame and has published articles with The Gospel Coalition and Church Tech Today. He and his wife Allison have recorded six worship projects--a tapestry of psalms, hymns, and original worship songs. They live in Melbourne, Florida, with their two daughters, Laura and Mallory.
