Overview

In Systematic Theology, Lewis Sperry Chafer, the founding president of Dallas Theological seminary, seeks to make the teachings of Bible conferences accessible to other programs of formal theological education. It is the first dispensational, premillenial systematic theology ever published. Chafer defined systematic theology as “the collecting, systematically arranging, comparing, exhibiting, and defending of all facts concerning God and his works from any and every source.” He believed abridged systematic theologies resulted in evil, so his work is complete and unabridged. It covers crucial topics that many earlier theological texts neglected, including ecclesiology, angelology, and typology. Chafer also discusses bibliology, theology proper, anthropology, soteriology, and eschatology. Systematic Theology is one of the heavyweight works of the evangelical movement, and it remains highly relevant today.

Chafer's Systematic Theology does a thorough and convincing job. He lays it out from Scripture in an authoritative way, that really builds your confidence. Not only does it give very detailed explanations and support, but it provides a comprehensive overview as well. While it's not always the easiest read, it leaves you with a confident comprehension of what the Bible teaches on the major themes. A family from our church bought me the eight volume hard-back edition back in the 80's. These books are well-worn. I bought the digital edition for another program for $40, and would really love to have it on Logos, when it becomes more affordable.

I received an invitation to make a review of these books barely two weeks after I purchased them. I was aware of their existence from my Pastor who was one a student in the Dallas Theological Seminary when Dr Chafer was still President of the Seminary. To be honest there is no way I could give a review of the magnificence of this work. But my first impression (and maybe I have not been able to see it yet - would to have page numbers on the digital version. That said the use of digital with all the verses that can be accessed directly with Logos with the hover and click of a mouse is literally a Godsend. And to have access to it from my IPad, or web browser app gives me the ability to view it. I am giving it 5 stars because it goes to the heart of what God's Grace - His Grace System is. There is a lifetime of learning within these pages, and thus I can only give it 5 stars based upon the preface. The only request for improvement would be on the aspect of adding page numbers, because my Pastor from time to time quotes page numbers when he is making a particular reference. But regardless,Thank you Logos - for bringing such a work of art into my life, and allowing me to take it with me wherever me and my I Phone go!
