Overview

These volumes in the Concordia Commentary Series give a theological exposition of the sacred Scripture. These commentaries enable pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the biblical text. This 35 volume collection from Concordia Publishing interprets Scripture as a cohesive whole centered in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Every passage bears witness to the good news that God has reconciled the world to himself through our Lord’s life, death, and resurrection.

The authors are sensitive to Scripture’s rich treasury of language, imagery, and themes, including such dialectics as Law and Gospel, sin and grace, death and new life, and folly and wisdom. They pay careful attention to the original Hebrew and Greek and shed further light on the text from archaeology, history, and extra-biblical literature. Finally, they apply Scripture’s message to the ongoing life of the church in terms of ministry, worship, proclamation of the Word, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and confession of the faith in the joyful anticipation of the life of the world to come.

  • Treats all the elements of traditional exegesis
  • Compares the original context and the contemporary context
  • Engages contemporary life and culture
  • Analyzes Scripture’s language, imagery, and themes
  • Pays special attention to the original Hebrew and Greek
I have a great deal of respect for this series. It takes serious regard of the biblical text in its original language, and deals with both textual difficulties and theology -- an impressive feat at a time when many commentaries are trying to avoid difficult details.

A spectacular resource! I've been waiting for a confessional Lutheran commentary for 30 years. These volumes do not disappoint.

The Concordia Commentaries are the most faithful and honest commentaries that I have discovered. Outstanding!

This is possibly the most extensive and faithful treatment of the Scripture from people who take it seriously. The textual analysis gives as much detail as you could want and the theological connections are routinely helpful. I rely on these commentaries regularly in my sermon and Bible Study preparation. If you're going to invest in any full set, this is the one that I would recommend.

I bought 11 volumes of this series and I found them pretty useful, and I would certainly buy others, even all of them, if only they cost less or there was a chance to find an occasional discount (in six years I have never seen any). However, I must say - in general - that while the strictly analytical part from the lexical and grammatical point of view I find it very well done and fruitful, as regards the exegesis and the interpretation I complain that they jump too hastily to the "Christological" and / or spiritual interpretation, giving too little importance, for instance, to the literary, cultural and historical context, and / or to the relationship with other roughly contemporary biblical texts
