In Pastoral Ministry in a Missional Church (PC101), Mike Goheen examines the identity of the church according to the Bible and then considers the implications of this identity for the church’s mission. Beginning with the concept of a missional community in the OT, Goheen traces God’s work among His people into the NT community of believers and offers perspective on how the ministries of today’s church can be structured to fulfill God’s calling.
“God’s mission is His long-term purpose or His long-term intention to restore the creation and all of human life. That story of God’s purpose to restore creation and to restore human life is told in the story of the Bible. And it especially moves, as it were, through three phases: through Israel, through Jesus, and finally through the church that is empowered by the Holy Spirit. So the story moves: Israel, Jesus, and the church.” (source)
“Richard Bauckham offers. He says that ‘a missional hermeneutic is a way of reading Scripture, first, in which mission is the hermeneutical key. Mission is a hermeneutical key. It’s not simply a study of the theme of mission in the biblical writings, but a way of reading the whole of Scripture with mission as its central interest and goal.’” (source)
“The second then is: ‘What is pastoral ministry in light of the missional church?’” (source)
“first, ‘the ot scriptures were written to equip God’s people for their missional calling to be a distinctive people.’” (source)
“‘The business of the sermon is to bring hearers face to face with Jesus Christ, as He really is.’” (source)
