Ian Jones

Dr. Ian F. Jones is Professor of Psychology and Counseling at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he is chairman of the Division of Church and Community Ministries and holds the Baptist Community Ministries’ Chair of Pastoral Counseling.

Previously, he served as Assistant Dean of the Division of Psychology and Counseling at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Director of the Baptist Marriage and Family Counseling Center in Fort Worth, Texas; and Professor of Sociology and Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Howard Payne University. In 2009 he received the Gary R. Collins Award for Academic Excellence in Christian Counseling.

Dr. Jones has contributed numerous articles to the field of Christian counseling and has written chapters in Competent Christian Counseling, Volume One: Foundations & Practice of Compassionate Soul Care (WaterBrook Press, 2002) and Caring for People God’s Way: Personal and Emotional Issues, Addictions, Grief, and Trauma (Thomas Nelson, 2005). He has written articles for the Evangelical Dictionary of Christian Education (Baker Academic, 2001) and The Popular Encyclopedia of Christian Counseling: An Indispensible Tool for Helping People with Their Problems (Harvest House, 2011). Dr. Jones is also the author of The Counsel of Heaven on Earth: Foundations for Biblical Christian Counseling (B&H, 2006).

With an MA, MDiv, and PhD from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a PhD in Sociology from the University of North Texas, Dr. Jones has taught, counseled, and conducted family conferences in the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, and Australia. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and his areas of teaching specialization include Counseling Theory, Cross-cultural Counseling, Historical Pastoral Counseling, and Counseling and Ethics.
