Overview

This excellent book will help if you are looking for something more challenging in your daily readings. From the archive of the young Charles Haddon Spurgeon's Park Street sermons (long before his well-known days at London's more famous Metropolitan Tabernacle), we have true pearls of biblical wisdom. What is particularly striking when reading these extracts is how appropriate they are to the ears of modern Christians in need of genuine spiritual insight.

Top Highlights

“The best proof you can ever have of God’s being mighty to save, dear hearers, is that he saved you.” (Page 11)

“Man has no idea what he is doing himself, but he is very good at questioning what God does” (Page 161)

“Do not measure sin by what other people say of it; but measure sin by what God says of it, and what your own conscience says of it. Now, I hold that secret sin, if anything, is the worst of sin; because secret sin implies that the man who commits it has atheism in his heart.” (Page 46)

“The highest saints may sin the lowest sins, unless kept by divine grace.” (Page 165)

“What kind of regeneration is that? We have seen people hanged that were regenerated in this fashion. There have been men that have lived all their lives as whoremongers, adulterers, thieves, and murderers, who have been regenerated in their baptism by that kind of regeneration. Oh, be not deceived by a regeneration so absurd, so palpable even to flesh and blood, as one of the lying wonders that have come from hell itself.” (Page 101)

I recommend this without hesitation.

I've enjoyed having a daily dose of Spurgeon as part of my devotional time, and will continue with Volume 2 in 2017. Whilst I do sometimes disagree with Spurgeon, more times than not, I find that he inspires and uplifts me, that he helps me to keep my focus on the cross rather than on myself. Whilst the language is dated (by about 150 years or so), I do still find it quite easy to read - almost musical at times - but this of course is what one would expect from the Great Preacher. The "For Meditation" by Crosby, at the end of each day's Spurgeon passage, is well done and often helps to apply the passage to current times or to give further insight. Highly recommended :)
