The Hebrew Bible, especially the book of Genesis, contains some of the most vivid stories in the world about encounter with God. Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham, Hagar and Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph; these names sound deep chords within us. We believe we know their stories. Yet how much more might we learn about them, or unearth about the God they present? This book has to do with the intimacy of God, and with our human response to that intimacy. It is a book about grace, and about prayer. As Trevor Dennis reminds us, these stories of Genesis ‘have the power to bring God out of heaven and down to earth’. All Bible passages have been freshly translated by the author, who is Canon Chancellor at Chester Cathedral.
