Overview

The Biblical Hebrew Study Book is a bi-monthly publication that works through the Tanakh (Biblical canon) word by word while readers examine the words in Hebrew and learn about their roots, original meanings and Biblical occurrences, and implications in English. You don’t have to know Hebrew in order to understand the Biblical text first-hand. Each volume highlights important Biblical Hebrew words in every section and offers fascinating interpretations to illuminate your understanding of the Biblical text.

This volume begins with the creation of the world and explores important words from the passage. In addition, it contains an introduction to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and a discussion of their pronunciation.

Top Highlights

“Every script starts from the same point. Let it be Chinese, Sumerian or Hebrew, writing starts from a pictographic stage, meaning that every item is represented by a symbol.” (Page 6)

“God took the letters of the Aleph-Bet that the man had recited, and” (Page 8)

“When we say in modern Hebrew that a person is מִשְׁתּוֹמֵם‎ (mishtomem), astonished, astounded, the word is based on the same root as שְׁמָמָה‎ (shmama) desolate. The meaning of the word is that the person is תּוֹהֶה‎ (toheh) wondering and בּוֹהֶה‎ (boheh) staring in the air. It’s as if there is a lack of reason and meaning, leading to the person’s astoundment.” (Page 18)

“Let’s take a look at the word אָב‎ (av) father. It is made from the first two letters of the Aleph-Bet. After a son is born to a man, the man becomes an אָב and he goes from being an א‎ (alef), the only one, to being more than one. Therefore, we add the ב‎ (bet), which symbolizes duality, to the letter א‎ (alef).” (Page 9)

“The Phoenician alphabet, which is almost identical to the Hebrew one (Phoenician is also a Semitic language) was adopted and adapted by the ancient Greeks who had close commerce relation with the Phoenicians.” (Page 7)
