Overview

In this discourse, American Baptist pastor Isaac Baptist examines Acts 13:27, offering insights for understanding why Jews did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah, and fulfilled prophecy by rejecting him. Backus first offers a brief survey of “the voices of the prophets of the Old Testament, which were exactly fulfilled in Jesus,” and then considers the “reason why the Jews did not receive him, though they had so often heard these plain predictions.”

Isaac Backus (1724-1806), born in Norwich, Conn., was a Baptist leader in colonial America and a defender of religious freedom. He became a Christian in 1741 during the Great Awakening. He became a Baptist in 1751, founded a Baptist congregation at Middleboro, Mass. in 1756 and served as its pastor until his death. Backus was a noted proponent of “separation of church and state” and on this issue voted to ratify the U.S. Constitution at the Massachusetts ratifying convention in 1788.
