Top Highlights

“The present chasm between the generations has been brought about almost entirely by a change in the concept of truth.” (Volume 1, Page 5)

“There is one basic agreement in almost all of the chairs of philosophy today, and that is a radical denial of the possibility of drawing a circle which will encompass all. In this sense, the philosophies of today can be called in all seriousness antiphilosophies.” (Volume 1, Page 17)

“Before these dates everyone would have been working on much the same presuppositions, which in practice seemed to accord with the Christian’s own presuppositions. This was true both in the area of epistemology and methodology. Epistemology is the theory of how we know, or how we can be sure that what we think we know of the world about us is correct. Methodology is how we approach the question of truth and knowing.” (Volume 1, Page 6)

“In concluding this section, let us note that when we speak of being under the line of despair, we do not mean that these people necessarily sit down and weep, but that they have given up all hope of achieving a rational unified answer to knowledge and life.” (Volume 1, Page 23)

“The unifying factor can be called rationalism, or if you prefer, humanism” (Volume 1, Page 9)

Francis Schaeffer

Francis Schaeffer (1912–1984) was an evangelical missionary. After studying at Hampden-Sydney College, Westminister Theological Seminary (where he studied under Cornelius Van Til), and Faith Theological Seminary, Schaeffer pastored churches in Pennsylvania and Missouri.

In 1948, Schaeffer moved to Switzerland and founded L’Abri, a community where people discuss philosophy and religion. Thousands of people have passed through L’Abri, and it has expanded into several other countries. Schaeffer held a presuppositional approach to apologetics which many believe heavily influenced the Christian Right movement in the United States.

He was the author of many books, including Escape from Reason and How Should We Then Live?, which have sold millions of copies worldwide.
