Overview

This devotional commentary on the book of Acts surveys the beginnings of the early church and the Spirit-directed spread of the gospel.

Adapted from M. R. De Haan's popular ministry on the Radio Bible Class broadcast, these twenty-six studies reflect the author’s thorough and biblical approach. They are practical in application, however, and are accessible to Christian readers of all levels.

“He shall come the second time and be received by this nation and then set up His Throne on earth” (Page 19)

“He came unto his own, and his own received him not” (Page 19)

“The cause of so much misunderstanding of this subject among believers is a failure or an unwillingness to distinguish between baptism in and filling with the Spirit. Many sincere believers experience the filling of the Holy Spirit in response to obedience, yielding and confession, and mistake that experience and joy of being filled for the one baptism. Filling with the Spirit may be repeated as often as we yield to the Spirit’s leading, but Paul says ‘there is one baptism’; viz., the pouring out of the Spirit on Pentecost, of which our water baptism is only a symbol. When we submit to baptism we thereby testify that we have already been baptized in the Spirit, and by faith are members of the Body of Christ. Before we close we mention one more thing about this baptism at Pentecost.” (Page 43)

“The first part of this commission was fulfilled in the first seven chapters of Acts, and was concluded when Stephen was stoned. Then followed the second step, ‘and in Samaria,’ when Philip went into Samaria and preached the Gospel there (Acts 8). And now we are ready for the third stage, ‘unto the uttermost part of the earth,’—‘into the highways and byways,’ to bid whosoever will to come. This third stage is introduced by the conversion of Paul in Acts 9.” (Page 56)

“We do find the gift of speaking in unknown tongues in two instances in Acts” (Page 30)
