How to Get the Most out of Seminary

Whether you’re just starting your studies or you’re headed back for your final year in school, making the most of your time in seminary should be a priority for every student. But not every student can foresee the realities, responsibilities, and challenges they’ll face while attending seminary. In Surviving and Thriving in Seminary (available for 20% off during the Back-to-School sale), two experienced professors (and former seminary students) tell you what to expect and how to navigate your years in seminary.

Danny Zacharias and Ben Forrest have written a concise and immensely practical guide to help students get the most out of seminary. They give you advice on how to prepare your own heart and relationships, how to manage your time and energy, and how to acquire the study skills you need.

Both authors were featured in a recent episode of the Naked Bible Podcast hosted by Michael Heiser. In their conversation, they relay their reasons behind writing this book. Ben Forrest put it this way, “One of the reasons I think Danny and I wrote this book is because we wish we both would have had this book in our own initial seminary experience. I think students expect, ‘I’m coming to seminary and it’s going to be like church camp. There’s going to be this spiritual high.’ And they get here and it’s just different.” To prepare incoming students (or reorient current students), this book encourages and equips them with the skills, habits, and expectations to thrive in seminary.

An essential resource

David S. Dockery, president of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, calls Surviving and Thriving in Seminary “essential reading for the next generation of seminary students.” Dockery isn’t the only seminary president or professor who has recognized the value of this book. Here are a few more endorsements for this book:

“This is a very fine, well written book. It will help more seminarians start well, do well, and finish well. I will gladly and enthusiastically commend it to our students.”
—Daniel L. Akin, president, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Wake Forest, NC)

“This book will be an essential tool for all pursuing theological education, and for all who desire to graduate and look back joyously on their season of ministry training.”
—Jason K. Allen, president, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Kansas City, MO)

“A manual of practical and spiritual wisdom for every seminary student—and for those who are thinking about becoming one. Highly recommended!”
—Timothy George, founding dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University (Birmingham, AL)
