Web Linking to Libronix

What is Web Linking to Logos Bible Software Series X?

The Libronix DLS, the technology on which the Series X products are built, supports what's known as a "private protocol". This allows you to create hyperlinks into the Libronix DLS almost anywhere you could create one to a web page. Instead of "http://<web-address>" simply use "libronixdls:<command>". (The "libronixdls:" protocol is implemented in a way similar to that used for the "news:" and "mailto:" protocols. They invoke your newsreader or mail client instead of navigating to a web page just like "libronixdls:" invokes the Libronix DLS.)

When the user clicks on a hyperlink to the "libronixdls:" protocol in a browser running under Microsoft Windows the system will run the Libronix DLS if it is not running and then execute the command. If the Libronix DLS is already running it will simply execute the command but will not necessarily come to the foreground. (If the Libronix DLS is not installed clicking the link will generate an error page.)

Linking to Bible References

The hyperlink to jump to a Bible reference looks like:

libronixdls:keylink|ref=[en]bible:Gen%201:1|res=LLS:ESV

The first part is the protocol, then the command string. The command string is made up of a command and then a parameter list. In this case the command is "keylink" and the only parameter is "ref", for "reference". The ref parameter has three parts: the language of the human readable reference (in this case "en" for "English"), the data type ("bible" for Bible references), and the human readable reference ("Gen 1:1") escaped into hyperlink-safe characters ("Gen%201:1" -- you can't have spaces, so they're converted to %20, the hexadecimal equivalent). The optional "res" parameter is the resource id of the preferred Bible.

Go ahead and try it: Genesis 1:1.

Linking from Your Web Page

Making Bible references on your web page link directly to Logos Bible Software Series X is a great way to enhance the usefulness of your page. Jumping right into Logos encourages readers to go deeper in their study and allows them to use the full power of the software to explore and learn more.

Not everyone uses Logos Bible Software, though, and if your readers don't yet have it you don't want them to get an error report. There's also an expectation that hyperlinks on web pages will navigate to other web pages unless you mark them explicitly.

We suggest you use a double link style to support both web-only and web-plus-Logos users -- this also lets the user take control and decide where they want to see the Bible reference.

Ephesians 2:8-9 explains that God's grace is our only way to salvation.

In this example the hyperlink uses Gospel Communications Network's Bible Gateway to resolve the hyperlink in the expected "web-only" way, and the icon next to the reference to navigate Logos Bible Software Series X.

A paragraph somewhere on the page can explain what the icon means and point readers to Logos if they want more information.

Click next to Bible references to open Logos Bible Software Series X directly to the passage. Learn more about linking directly to Logos and find other web sites that support integrated Bible study.

To automatically generate the HTML code for a dual link simply enter a Bible reference here and copy the HTML code below. (Don't forget to right-click on the icon and save it as LibronixLink.gif on your own web site. You may need to change the path to the image in the generated HTML to reflect the file's location on your site.)
