The Lion Access Guides are resources for pastors, students, Bible study leaders and Sunday school teachers to help them understand and teach about important Christian topics. Chock-full of interesting and useful information, the Baptist Times in 2002 remarked that “each pocket-sized book is the usual mix of concise and informative text…we have come to expect from Lion.” And the Methodist Recorder said the books offered here are “[a] well-researched series which could serve as both refresher course to the knowledgeable and introduction to our religious heritage for the 21st century student.” Flame Magazine says the series “offers essential information on key religious subjects in a clear, lively…style.”
About the Authors
Kevin O’Donnell, an Anglican priest, has two books in this series: Postmodernism and A History of Ideas. With a degree in Biblical Studies from the University of Manchester, he trained for ordination at St. Stephen’s House, Oxford, and is now Rector of St. Mary’s Church, West Chiltington. Before and after his theological training he taught religious education (RE) in English schools and was chaplain at Heathfield School, Ascot. He is the author of a number of RE text books and a contributor to many others. Having studied philosophy as part of his theology degrees, he taught philosophy at sixth-form level, which is the final two years students spend in a secondary school. He is the author of Descartes and Their Hearts Burned, an excursion through the Old Testament based on the Emmaus Road discussion.
Michael Keene’s contributions to this series are: Christianity, World Religions, Jesus, and The Bible. He has written textbooks for England’s General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and the RE curriculum. Keene graduated from London University with an Honors degree in Theology and Religious Studies. He spent many years teaching in different schools in London, Hampshire and Suffolk before devoting full time to writing. His books include The Development of Christianity, Seekers after Truth, and Examining Four Religions.

A History of Ideas
Humans have determinedly sought answers to why we are here and how we should live. The study of the history of ideas is of central importance for understanding how we have become who we are. O'Donnell presents an excellent overview of the major philosophers and movements from the ancient times to the present day, blending philosophy, religion, ethics and spirituality, and showing how they have influenced society and history. Beginning with the Greeks, the author covers eastern philosophy, the birth of Christianity, the medieval period, the enlightenment, the modern age and the postmodern condition. The book also explores how concepts of God have changed as different world-views have developed. Major thinkers covered include: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Newton, Nietzsche and Einstein. |
 |
Christianity
In Christianity Keene offers lucid information on the main aspects of the Christian faith—from its origins and history, to Christian beliefs, ways of worshipping and contemporary concerns. The author covers such topics as: from one Church to many, Christianity worldwide, spirituality, and sacraments and service. |

World Religions
Keene offers a comprehensible overview of the main religions of the world—Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism and the Baha'i Faith. |

Jesus
Jesus is one of the most influential figures of all time. But who was he? What can we know about him? And how has he helped shape human history? Keene offers a clear portrait of the founder of Christianity by showing us the world in which Jesus lived, covering such topics as life under the Romans, Jewish beliefs and festivals, and life in Galilee. In the chapter on Jesus Through History, the author discusses Jesus and women, Jesus and Judaism, Jesus and Islam, and Jesus in Film. |

The Bible
The Bible offers a brilliant overview of the Bible, answering questions like: How was the Bible put together?; What do we know of the history of Bible times?; and How has the Bible impacted society down the ages? Keene discusses the patriarchs, the Exodus, the Assyrians and Babylonians, and the birth of Christianity. He portrays village and town life, feasts and holy days, working life, and marriage and family life. In the chapter on the impact of the Bible, we see how it has affected places like Africa, Europe, America, art, music and film. |
