Overview

The role of women in the church has become an important, and often controversial, topic of debate in recent years. Questions regarding the issue are often looked at from a variety of viewpoints. How should women act and dress in church? What topics should be addressed within ministries to women? Should women have leadership roles at church?

This collection brings together fourteen diverse titles that discuss this very issue and provide numerous discussion points on other topics and concerns related to women.

You’ll find insight and discussion on topics like becoming a woman of God, women in ministry, being a woman and mother in the home, creating a ministry to women, troubles that women face, the role of women in the church and much more!

Authors such as Elizabeth George, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, John MacArthur and Nancy Wilson, in addition to many other famous authors (both men and women) discuss old and new perspectives on the role of women in the church and issues that can stem from this debate.

This collection is a great way to discover a variety of opinions on the role of women in the church, gain insight on other related topics and learn practical scriptural ways to address these issues.”

Men and Women in the Church

  • Author: Sarah Sumner
  • Publisher: IVP
  • Publication Date: 2003
  • Pages: 332

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Avoiding the pitfalls of both radical feminism and reactionary conservatism, Sarah Sumner traces a new path through the issues – biblical, theological, psychological and practical – that arise between complementarians and egalitarians on the topic of women and the Church. Arguing that men and women are both equal and distinct, Sumner encourages us to find ways to honor and benefit from the leadership gifts of both. Men and Women in the Church is a book for all who want a fresh and hope-filled look at a persistent problem.

Evangelicals stand divided in their view of women in the church. On one side stand complementarians, arguing the full worth of women but assigning them to differing roles. On the other side stand egalitarians, arguing that the full worth of women demands their equal treatment and access to leadership roles. Is there a way to mend the breach and build consensus? This easily accessible volume looks beneath the surface at how complementarians and egalitarians talk past one another, and offers a hope for the parties on either side of the divide.

Interview with Sarah Sumner

IVP: Briefly describe the purpose of Men and Women in the Church.

Sarah Sumner: Part of the answer is this--the purpose of the book is to address people such as myself who need daily to repent from selfish ambition. My own biases, for instance, have been very self-serving. My sins of dressing immodestly have been problematic too. But God has forgiven me and helped me to make wiser decisions. To be perfectly frank, I wrote the book because I felt called by God to write it. Or rather, I felt hemmed in by God. Almost every signal in my world told me to write this book. And now, the glorious outcome is that God changed me in the process of writing this book. He changed me for the better. I am praying He will change my readers too.

IVP: What is your hope for the readers of Men and Women in the Church?

Sumner: My hope is that each reader will catch a vision. That each one will be inspired by the idea of making it a top priority to obey the commandments of God. I can't wait to hear someone say, "I get it! I see what you're talking about! I want to repent from my worldly view of manhood and womanhood. And I want to repent from my sins of partiality. I want to be the kind of husband who trusts God enough to exalt my wife as the Father exalts the Son. Or I want to be the kind of wife who respects my husband and submits to him in everything. I want to be the kind of person who celebrates the dignity of men and women. I don't want to miss out on God's plan. I don't want to be stuck in sexual sin, and finally, I think it's possible for me not to be. I don't want be caged in a prison of fear, and finally, I see that I don't have to be." On and on I could go. My hope is that my readers will choose to become long-term doers of the Word (James 1:22).

This is a deep and important book, with a significance far beyond what the title alone would suggest.… I strongly encourage anyone who is concerned about the conduct of visible church life to study this book carefully. It provides a rich discussion of all the major issues concerning gender and leadership in the church, and often brilliantly engages the major voices already on the field.

—Dallas Willard, author of The Divine Conspiracy

This book is a tribute to Sarah Sumner's academic devotion and puts to good use her theological training. Her analysis is fresh and much on the mark. Helga and I are praying that her ministry will have a great and holy impact.

—Carl F. H. Henry, Founding Editor of Christianity Today, and author of God, Revelation and Authority

With courage and honesty, Dr. Sumner explores the biblical and cultural assumptions behind evangelicals' disagreements over gender and leadership. This book cuts to the heart of Christian anxieties about sexuality and the church. It gives new hope to women and men who have felt torn between their support for women's ministries and their adherence to scriptural norms. I recommend it very highly.

—Dana L. Robert, Truman Collins Professor of World Mission, Boston University

Dr. Sumner's Men & Women in the Church is one of the most carefully and sensitively written and argued works available on a topic of vital concern for the churches, their leaders and their people in this new millennium. Even among readers who have already taken definite stands, egalitarians can learn modesty, complementarians moderation.

—Harold O. J. Brown, John R. Richardson Professor of Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte campus

I've met with hundreds of female students, youth workers and pastors desperate for a balanced biblical view on women in leadership. Finally, we have one.

—Kara Powell, Ph.D., Coordinator of Women's Youth Network

This landmark book by theologian Dr. Sarah Sumner is long overdue. I predict this book will engender helpful discussions among concerned Christian leaders for decades to come.

—Ted Engstrom, President Emeritus of World Vision International and former President of Youth for Christ International

Sarah Sumner's book has the promise to break the divisive deadlock between egalitarians and complementarians that continues to hinder the effectiveness of the church. Sumner's clear, carefully argued message challenges all of us regardless of our position. A must-read for Christian leaders and potential leaders.

—Lilian Calles Barger, President of the Damaris Project

Sarah's solid biblical approach clarified several issues for me personally. Men & Women in the Church is the 'talking point' book on this subject for this generation.

—Jim Burns, Ph.D., President, YouthBuilders

Every once in a while someone enters into a theological skirmish and lifts it to a level where rays of biblical sunshine reveal a whole new way of looking at the issue. Honest male readers will repent—at least, I did—of some thoughts. So will honest female readers. And we'll humbly and joyfully explore the new dimension Sarah has helped us see.

—Jim Garlow, Senior Pastor, Skyline Wesleyan Church

Dr. Sumner's book is like a fresh breeze from the New Testament, moving clouds of bias and freeing us to look again at the valuable ministry for women in the kingdom of God.

—Dr. Barry McMurtrie, Senior Pastor, Crossroads Christian Church, Corona, California, and Chairman, Londen Institute for World Evangelism

Sarah Sumner's practical approach to Scripture offers the church new hope for unity and growth.

—Pat Verbal, Founder, Ministry to Today's Child

I have felt deep need for someone to enter the discussion of gender and leadership in the church and provide some fresh perspectives and new approaches. Dr. Sumner has listened well. Her work is done in the context both of careful scholarship and of personal experience within the evangelical community. And, I believe, she provides an important contribution to the life of the church.

—Gregory Waybright, Ph.D., President, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Sarah Sumner (Ph. D. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is Special Assistant to the Dean/Strategic Development and Professor of Theology and Ministry at the Haggard School of Theology, Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, California).

Women Mentoring Women

  • Author: Vickie Kraft

  • Pages: 224

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

The twenty-first century has brought a new urgency for Christian women to search for meaningful relationships where they can live out their faith. This is in part due to our increasingly secular lifestyle and the radical changes in marriage and family life that have isolated and discouraged many women. Women Mentoring Women offers the solution to a chronic weakness in churches: the lack of involvement of wives, sisters, mothers, and daughters in vital women’s ministries.

Vickie Kraft is Minister to Women at Northwest Bible Church in Dallas. She is also cofounder of Titus 2:4 Ministries, Inc., a ministry established to encourage and equip women to do for each other what Scripture teaches. She is the author of The Influential Woman: How Every Woman Can Make a Dynamic Difference in Other Women’s Lives.

Shepherding a Woman’s Heart: A New Model for Effective Ministry to Women

  • Author: Bev Hislop
  • Publisher: Moody
  • Publication Date: 2003
  • Pages: 208

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

We may look at our full slate of Bible studies and women’s ministry programs and wonder why women who are hurting don’t get involved. What a woman in pain needs is a loving shepherd. Why a shepherd? Because a shepherd responds with compassion and understanding. Bev Hislop believes that an effective women’s ministry should involve women who, under the authority of their church’s leadership, are shepherds at heart. A shepherd skillfully dispenses pastoral care that is timely and appropriate. Most importantly, a woman who is a true shepherd ministers to each woman by leading her to drink—first sips from a teaspoon, then mouthfuls from a cup, the cup of the living water—Jesus Christ. Out of her years of experience ministering to hurting women, Bev offers this book in the hope that, by raising up shepherds equipped to address the issues of a woman’s heart, ministries to women will become more relevant and more vital than ever before.

Bev Hislop has nearly thirty years of experience ministering to women in a variety of church contexts. She currently coordinates the pastoral care to women courses at Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon. She serves on the boards of Network of Women in Leadership and Ministry Wives Network International.

God's High Calling for Women

  • Author: John MacArthur
  • Publisher: Moody
  • Publication Date: 1987
  • Pages: 96

God's high calling for women in the church is outlined in 1 Timothy 2:9-15. If followed, His plan results in blessing, unity, and glory for God. Dr. MacArthur discusses major aspects of concern for women in the church as outlined by the apostle Paul: their attitude, appearance, testimony, roles, design, and contribution. This is a thorough study on the important and controversial subject of women in the church.

Widely known for his thorough, candid approach to teaching God’s Word, John MacArthur is a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and has served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California since 1969. John and his wife, Patricia, have four grown children and fourteen grandchildren.

Woman in the Bible

  • Author: Mary J. Evans

  • Publication Date: 2006
  • Pages: 160

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

The debate on women’s roles often goes on without a careful look at what the Bible actually says. Mary J. Evans seeks to fill this gap by surveying all the relevant Old and New Testament texts. In her treatment of the Biblical texts, she presents all the major options and deduces a reasonable conclusion, presenting her position clearly but not dogmatically. She also supplies helpful information on the cultural and religious influences affecting the New Testament church. In the light of the biblical evidence she asks us to re-examine our current attitudes and practices. The church today cannot afford to ignore her findings. What is a woman’s place at home, in the church and in society? Are there roles which should or should not be permitted? Woman in the Bible is a comprehensive and fair survey of the Biblical passages that deal significantly with women.

The best book in support of women in ministry written from an evangelical perspective with a commitment to careful exegesis.

—David M. Scholer, Professor of New Testament and Dean, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary

Comprehensive… fair… aware of the major literature.

—Walter Liefeld, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity

A helpful overview of all the crucial passages with a careful and thorough evangelical scholarship.

—Roberta Hestenes, Associate Professor and Director of Christian Formation and Discipleship, Fuller Theological Seminary

The strengths of this book make it the fairest introduction to the issue (even if one disagrees with Evans’ position) and a good contribution to the literature.

The feminist revolution was suppose to make us feel better about ourselves, bringing us greater fulfillment and freedom. Yet many of us are feeling anything but fulfilled and free. Across generational lines. inside the church and out, we are understanding that we have lost the beauty and wonder of our distinctive makeup and calling as women. We are realizing that what was supposed to lift us up has been tearing down society, churches, and most importantly, our own families.

There is now a new movement spreading its seeds—seeds if hope, humility, obedience, and prayer. It is a call to return to godly womanhood, and it is resonating in the hearts of women everywhere.

Let its truth ring in your own heart through the powerful messages of these seven beloved teachers: Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Susan Hunt, Mary A. Kassian, Carolyn Mahaney, Barbara Hughes, P. Bunny Wilson, and Dorothy Patterson. They approach the subject of womanhood from different angles and teaching styles, but throughout there runs a thread. One that will instill itself in your spirit. A thread of joy and delight with the greatness of God's created order and the part He wants you to play in His grand, redemptive plan.

Praise Her in the Gates: The Calling of Christian Motherhood

  • Author: Nancy Wilson

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

For a Christian, motherhood is the subtle art of building a house in grace—the wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1). Each day’s work is significant, for it contributes toward the long-term plan. Each nail helps a house stand in a storm. But motherhood isn’t a simple formula. Building a home—childbirth, education, discipline—requires holy joy and a love of beauty. The mother who fears God does not fear the future.

Nancy Wilson is a pastor’s wife and homemaker in Moscow, Idaho. She is the author of numerous books, and writes a column for women in Credenda/Agenda magazine. She and her husband, Douglas, have three grown children.

Women and Men in the Fourth Gospel: A Genuine Discipleship of Equals

  • Author: Margaret Beirne
  • Publisher: T&T Clark
  • Publication Date: 2004
  • Pages: 272

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

The fourth gospel presents the reader with an early Christian text in which women and men are treated as “a discipleship of equals.” Specifically, the gospel contains six examples of “gender pairs” of characters (a widely-accepted Lukan feature). The members of each pair are portrayed in a parallel or contrasting faith encounter with the Johannine Jesus that is of substantial theological importance to the gospel’s stated purpose (John 20:31). Through close examination of these pairs, Margaret M. Beirne offers a reading of the Gospel which gives support to the equality of women and men with respect to the nature and value of their discipleship.

Margaret Beirne received her Ph. D. in Theology from the Melbourne College of Divinity and is currently Principal and Lecturer in Biblical Studies at the Centre for Christian Spirituality at Randwick, New South Wales, Australia.

How does a woman build her house? Nancy Wilson begins with the table, remembering how each scratch and stain in the wood chronicles a memory—"hours of stories and jokes, questions and concerns (through courtships and pregnancies), prayers and discussions. . ." She continues, each essay full of stories and encouragement—the beauty of imperfection, the comfort of Velveeta, the strengths of mothers- and daughters-in-law, the honesty that is submission, the laughter of reading aloud. As ever, while Nancy draws out our sins and weaknesses and sore spots, she comforts us with the favor of God and rouses us to a joyous faith.
