Overview

This volume, The Outpouring, is in keeping with a central commitment of The Friends of Israel to view Scripture through the prism of the cultural, historical setting in which it was cast by the Holy Spirit. John's Gospel, in its treatment of the interaction between the Messiah and Israel's great feasts, gives a magnificent exposure to this pattern. The Outpouring will enhance your understanding of how the Lord certified the credentials of our Jewish Messiah among Abraham's seed and in relationship to the great festive commemoratives of the Jewish nation. In the process, we fondly hope that you will appreciate more the wonder of the riches of His grace and the glories of our Savior's love.

Top Highlights

“At some point in Israel’s history, on one of the festive occasions, a singular historical event was to take place. From among the heirs of Abraham, the promised Messiah would step forward and present His credentials before Jehovah, priests, and people.” (Page 14)

“Estimates of the numbers of people attending Passover at this time go as high as 3 million. We are told by reliable sources that more than 200,000 worshipers could be accommodated on the Temple mount at one time. When we realize how many came to Jerusalem for the great national festivals, coupled with the fact that a representation from all segments of dispersed Jewry were in attendance, one can readily understand why Jehovah chose to offer the credentials of the God-Man to the nation at these feasts.” (Page 27)

“Jesus’ act had been immensely satisfying to the people who had been callously misused by the men who now accused Him. In their minds the event had been long overdue, and their hearts pumped with a potentially volatile determination to see this trafficking brought to a halt.” (Page 37)

“The period in question was, we are convinced, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish feast of the New Year.” (Page 61)

“The area of interest was the chamber that contained the stones placed there from the dismantled altar profaned by the notorious Seleucid, Antiochus Epiphanes, who sacrificed a swine on it when he invaded Jerusalem. These stones could not be discarded, because they were from the great altar. Neither could they be used again, because they had been defiled. So they were stored at the Temple, awaiting the coming of the Messiah, when He would instruct them about how to resolve the problem. The Messiah would soon be on the scene.” (Page 33)

It is quite remarkable that we Christian have to be remanded that the bible is a jewish book. It was great and very useful to awaken me to to that reality so now I can be more careful when I study.
