Overview

Free Will Baptist is a denomination of churches that share a common history, name, and an acceptance of the Arminian theology of free grace, free salvation, and free will. To help readers discover what the Scriptures say about the duty of a deacon, O'Donnell explores the biblical basis for these servants of God, giving relevant application to the works they are to perform.

Top Highlights

“Philippians 1:1 is the first one which definitely refers to the office of a deacon in the church. The only exception might be the reference to Phebe as a servant (or deaconness) from Cenchrea (Romans 16:1). This woman was one assigned to a particular task rather than to an office.” (Page 12)

“deacon’ also referred to a servant or to one who ‘executes the commands of another.’” (Page 11)

“A deacon’s authority in the church is determined by the influence of his personal character and Christian testimony. Just as the pastor, so the deacon is a personal leader at work for the Lord. It is through the lowliness of service that the deacon is to rise to influence the church. He is faithfully to perform the task given to him by the church and humbly serve in the capacity to which he has been elected.” (Page 14)

“A recent convert should never be appointed as a deacon. The church should always be observing the men in the church. When a deacon is needed, he should be selected from among the men who have demonstrated a capability to fill the position. He does not have to be ‘tested.’ He has already proved himself to the church and they know his potential.” (Pages 27–28)

“. Full of the Holy Ghost. All church work is spiritual. Nothing is secular in God’s work.” (Page 22)
