Overview

Do our relationships in the church reflect Christ? Does church sometimes look more like a dysfunctional family than a healthy one? Do we really understand what discipleship ought to look like? By limiting the definition of a healthy church to human standards we are effectively missing God’s point for it.

In a world of competing voices about what church is all about, Gene Getz, with the wisdom God has granted him over decades of ministry, provides a solidly grounded and thoroughly biblical approach to how God assesses the strength, health, and maturity of a local church. He addresses:

  • The definition of the church
  • The standard of measure by which the church should be defined. Is it centered on Christ? Does it display the fruit of the Spirit? Is it growing in its ability to display faith, hope, and love?
  • How does one measure leadership?
  • How does one measure worship?
  • What is the one, ultimate standard the church is measured by?

In The Measure of a Healthy Church, Gene Getz helps you find the biblical approach to how God assesses the strength, health, and maturity of the local church. Turn your questions into answers as you learn scriptural truths necessary for measuring real success.

“Paul culminated this section of his letter with one of the greatest conclusions in all of Scripture: ‘Therefore, since we have been justified through faith [just like Abraham], we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God’ (5:1–2).” (Page 54)

“Principle 4. When measuring a church, we must evaluate the degree to which the true disciples in that church are functioning as a family.” (Page 28)

“when New Testament writers selected the term ‘saints,’ they were describing people who were ‘holy ones’ in God’s sight.” (Page 26)

“Principle 1. When measuring a church, we can only evaluate a local, visible body of believers.” (Page 27)

“Principle 2. When measuring a church, we must measure functions, not forms or structures.” (Page 27)
