Why Bible Study is Important to My Life
While on my Christian journey, I am learning to be a student of His word. Through prayer and bible study, the Almighty has enriched my life’s experience by giving me the precious privilege of spending time in His word. Because it is impossible to enumerate all of the reasons why bible study is important to my life, I have listed a sample:
First, God’s word is a “lighthouse” in a sea of divergent voices (Psalm 119:105). Unfortunately, in the 21st century, the vast majority of people decide what is right or wrong based on popular opinion. For example, the creation story (Genesis 1:1 - 2:3) is widely viewed as one of many creation myths because most scientists treat the narrative as a folk tale that the ancient Israelites had weaved around their campfires.
However, through bible study, I have learned that the Holy Writ is the inspired word of Almighty God and not just an inspiring booklet (2 Timothy 3:15,16).
Second, God’s word reveals His perfect character in contrast to our fallen world. In the book of Hosea, for example, the Most High, with painstaking expression, shows what great lengths He will go to in order to redeem the rebellious southern kingdom of Samaria (Hosea 3:1-5).
Further, bible study shows our Lord will reject those who reject knowledge of Him (Hosea 4:6). On the other hand, it shows our Lord as a tender Parent (Hosea 11:3,4) who is longing to aid His helpless children.
Third, through bible study the Almighty has promised to fill those who dig deeply in His word (Matthew 5:6). In addition, He promised to provide for those who give Him first place in their lives (Matthew 6:33).
Fourth, bible study is my daily bread (Deuteronomy 8:3). Physically, my body requires food from which it derives nourishment. The nourishment (i.e, vitamins, minerals etc.) provides the energy that fuels my body. When I do not feed my body on a regular basis, it will not function as it was designed.
Likewise, when I feed on God’s word daily, the word provides the spiritual sustenance that I need. Bible study provides the spiritual vitamins and minerals that fuel me spiritually. Moreover, I have to daily dine on God’s word because if I do not, I will not function properly (i.e., spiritually).
In conclusion, my prayer is that He will increase my days and allow me more time to spend more time in His word.
