Bible Study Group

In March 2004, we received a phone call from a couple in our church who told us that they were starting a Bible Study group and we were one of the couples God placed on their hearts to invite to join. This was really an answer to prayer because I had been praying for someone with whom to study the Bible. The original group consisted of six couples from the same church. Sometime after the group started two more couples joined. In operation for nearly two years, our group currently consists of 16 very faithful people meeting on Tuesday evenings for a meal and Bible Study. Each week the ladies decide what the menu for the next week will be, who will make what, and at whose house the meeting will take place.

At the first meeting of the newly formed Bible Study group, we set goals and decided which book of the Bible we would study. A major goal set forth was to be a caring, sharing, group and, using Proverbs 11:13; 20:19; 26:20, to be confidential with our requests. We also wanted to be a support group for each other that would come together to Praise God (Psalm 100) and become a light for Jesus in our community.

First, we started studying the book of John, then Romans, Proverbs, and most recently Revelations. Each week someone different facilitates the Bible study. Commentaries of the leader’s choice were used. My favorite commentaries were “Through the Bible” by Dr. McGee and Warren Weirsby’s “The Bible Exposition Commentary.” Other members chose different commentaries. When we studied Revelation, we used Dr. David Jeremiah’s tapes.

We have grown in our faith and in our knowledge of the Bible through our studies as well as becoming a closely-knit group of believers. One of the things we do after our study is completed is share prayer requests and pray for these specific needs. One example of answered prayer was a lady in our Bible Study group who requested prayer to relieve her of the constant headaches that she was experiencing. We gathered around her and placed hands on her and prayed. The next week she reported that she had not been bothered with a headache all week. What a praise report!
