Introductions: Getting to know the Logos Family

We are so glad you have decided to join the Logos family. Part of understanding this community is understanding a bit about our company. This section is devoted to providing you with a bit of "family history" as well as some definitions for commonly used terms around the Logos world. Consider this the "getting to know you" section!

Family History: The Story of Logos Bible Software

Logos Research Systems, Inc., (d.b.a. Logos Bible Software) was founded in 1992 by two Microsoft employees, Bob Pritchett and Kiernon Reiniger, along with Bob's father, Dale Pritchett. The three "quit their day jobs" to pursue the vision of delivering top-notch software tools to Christian users.

Bob and Kiernon produced the first commercial Bible software for Windows: Logos Bible Software for Microsoft Windows v1.0. With Dale contributing his expertise in sales, marketing, and publisher relations, that release quickly became the high-end standard for Bible software, and numerous product upgrades and library expansions were offered over the next decade. In 1995, Logos released version 2.0 of the software, which became one of the first commercial applications to use Unicode technology. In 2001, the all-new Logos Bible Software Series X product line was launched, based on a more flexible, more powerful architecture dubbed the Libronix Digital Library System (Libronix DLS).

The launch of Logos Bible Software 3 marks a major milestone in the story of our company. Years in the making, the features, the design, and the entire concept of this new version is very exciting for us. Including unique original language tools and advanced library searching features, this new version will revolutionize the way people study the Bible!

We are excited to see what the future holds for Logos Bible Software. With many special projects in the works, it is a great time to be a part of the Logos family. You are now a part of Logos history, a part of the Logos family, and a part of the pursuit of new and better ways to study the Word of God.

Speaking the Language of the Family: Defining Terms

To better understand the way your Logos Bible Software works, we decided it would be important to explain some of the common acronyms and names you may hear or read associated with Logos.

Libronix \lI brah' niks\ noun
All Logos products that have been produced since 2001 use Libronix technology. You will always need to use Libronix to view, search and study your Logos digital library.
Etymological Note: The word "Libronix" was created by combining two words: Library and Electronics.

LDLS \el˙dē˙el˙es\ acronym
[Libronix Digital Library System] 2001: the software platform which operates your electronic library and the vast array of study tools.

LLS \el˙el˙es\ acronym
[Logos Library System] 1995: the original name of the Logos Bible Software platform, released as a part of Logos Bible Software v2.0 in 1995. This name is no longer in use, as the Libronix DLS has taken over as the name of the platform on which your electronic library runs.

Logos Research Systems, Inc. \lō-găs ri-sərch sis-təms, iŋk\  noun
1992: the parent company of Logos Bible Software and Libronix, the leading developer of electronic Bible study tools since 1992.

Logos Bible Software \lō-găs bī-bəl sȯft-war\ noun
1991: products built on Logos Library System or Libronix DLS together with a collection of electronic books, making up the complete electronic library package.

Series X \sir-ēz eks\ noun
2001: product line of Logos Bible Software packages, launched in 2001 and based upon the flexibility and power of the Libronix DLS architecture.

Update \up dAt\ verb
Each time a new version of LDLS becomes available, you can update to that version for free. That's one of the best things about Logos - you can rest easy that you'll always have the newest tools for Bible study. If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can check for updates by opening Libronix and going to Tools | Libronix Update. We recommend you try it every 3 or 4 months.

Upgrade \up grAd\ verb
This typically refers to when you purchase a higher level library (e.g. you currently own the Bible Study Library and are upgrading to the Scholar's Library). When you upgrade you will maintain access to everything you currently own. We'll never take books away from your digital library.

Download \daun lōd\ noun
There are hundreds of Logos products that are exclusively available as downloads from Logos.com. Purchasing a download is the easiest, quickest way to add books to your digital library. It only takes a few minutes to find, purchase and start using any downoadable book from Logos.com.

Unlock \un 'läk\ verb
Each book in your digital library has been unlocked either by a serial number or an unlock code. If your product did not come with a serial number, that means you'll need an email from Logos to unlock your books. This email will either be automatically generated when you purchase a "Download" or you can request by calling Logos' customer support team. Either way, it's important that you have access to everything you're entitled to.

We hope you aren’t confused by all of these terms, but we thought it might be helpful to provide a little bit of background for when you hear an acronym like LDLS. All you need to remember is this: Logos Bible Software. This name is everything you see above, bundled into a complete package of electronic library tools, books, and study companions, that allow you to interact with God’s Word and be a member of this family.
