The Apostolic Fathers in English and Greek with Morphology (3 editions) (6 vols.)
- Editor: Michael W. Holmes
- Publisher: Logos Research Systems
As the earliest extant Christian writings outside the New Testament, the Apostolic Fathers are a primary resource for the study of early Christianity. These writings provide significant and unparalleled insight into the Christian movement during a critical transitional stage in its history. Michael W. Holmes, a top scholar in this field, considers them to hold "fundamental significance...for the study of the New Testament."
(Editions included in this product are Holmes (1999), Lake (1912), and Lightfoot-Harmer (1898).)
The text, translation, and notes which Holmes has provided manage to transform the work of a previous generation of scholarship into a useful resource for the modern study of the Apostolic Fathers. I gladly welcome this second edition and believe it represents a worthy and contemporary revision of the old Lightfoot-Harmer volume. This text undoubtedly should be recognized as a superior collection of materials when placed in comparison with the commonly used edition of the Apostolic Fathers that was published by Kirsopp Lake.
—Clayton N. Jefford, Journal of Early Christian Studies
Baker Book House and Michael Holmes are to be congratulated. This new edition is a worthy successor to Lightfoot with new introductions that bring the discussions up to date and enough revision of the translations to make it readable for a large audience.
—Gordon Fee
Michael Holmes has put a new generation of students in his debt. The value of The Apostolic Fathers is enhanced by new introductions, bibliographies, and notes. I welcome it warmly.
—James D. G. Dunn
Michael W. Holmes is Professor of Biblical Studies and Early Christianity, Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota. The author of numerous papers on questions of textual criticism, he is also the North American editor for the International Greek New Testament Project and a member of its North American Executive Committee.
A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 3rd ed. (BDAG)
- Author: Walter Bauer
- Editor: Frederick William Danker
- Publisher: University of Chicago Press
- Pages: 1,188
Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.
It goes without saying that all scholars and students of early Christianity will profit from BDAG and will want to own a copy of this fine new edition.
—Review of Biblical Literature, October 2002
Any reader familiar with the second edition (BAGD - 1979...) will notice an immediate and sharp improvement in semantic clarity and presentation in this third edition.
—Review of Biblical Literature, October 2002
This is a beautiful, user-friendly book, and the editor and the publisher deserve to be congratulated on its production. In physical appearance as well as content it marks a change in the tradition of Bauer lexicons.
—Review of Biblical Literature, October 2002
Like its predecessor, Danker will be enormously helpful to students and scholars working with the NT.
—Harold W. Attridge, Review of Biblical Literature
It is without doubt the best tool of its kind that exists in any language, and the present edition is decidedly superior to the earlier ones.
—Jerker Blomqvist, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

Church Origins Collection captures the earliest development of the church in history, theology and theory. The ten volumes offered explore the cultural, doctrinal and traditional landscape of the budding church. These include the church’s roots in and relationships with the Graeco-Roman, Judaic, and Mesopotamian worlds; its integration into African and European cultures; its ministerial life and doctrines; and more.
Written by top scholars of the New Testament, each title presents state-of-the-art scholarship and keen insight into the origins of the Christian church. The volumes focus not only on where the church has been, but the implications of that history on our present era. This includes the contemporary view of the role of elder in the church, the ordination of women, and charismatic gifts.
