Exploring the Old Testament

If you desire to more clearly understand how God works in the lives of His people, studying the Bible is the place to begin. And while delving into specific passages is important and necessary, those familiar chapters and stories take on new dimensions when you see them as part of a sweeping panorama of the Bible.

A study of the Old Testament is an essential foundation for understanding the New, since “the New is in the Old concealed, and the Old is in the New revealed.” Here, in easy-to-read form, is a survey of the books of history, poetry, wisdom, and prophecy that comprise the first 39 books of the Bible.

Thought-provoking questions and exploration activities at the end of each section will prompt you to deeper study—and to consider the practical applications of what you have just read. But best of all, as knowledge of God's Word draws you closer to Him, your heart and life will be enriched as well.

Introduction from the Print Edition

Study of the Old Testament offers a fascinating experience for all who desire to understand more clearly the workings of God. Well-known Bible stories take on a new dimension when seen in the perspective of a sweeping panoramic overview. Exploring the Old Testament and its companion text, Exploring the New Testament, provide this overview of the entire Bible. A capable teacher of others must first develop spiritual depth and biblical knowledge. These books will assist in attaining both of these goals.

Here in easy-to-read form is a survey of the interesting and challenging Bible books of history, law, poetry, and prophecy. To avoid duplication of historical background information, the study is arranged in sequence according to the date the Bible book was written or when the prophet ministered, not in the order they appear in most Bibles.

Also, to avoid specific differences in interpretation, the book simply presents what the Bible says rather than the various ways individuals and groups have interpreted some passages. For those who feel specific interpretations are necessary as well, we suggest that you consult additional sources. The bibliography found at the end of the text should provide you with more in-depth resources for gathering this information.

Each chapter is followed by suggested questions and exploration activities. Questions are content centered and can profitably be used for reviewing historical fact and development. The project and discussion portion will direct you to deeper study of the Word, helping you rethink and crystallize its major truths and apply them to your daily life.

Dr. Smith was Professor of Old Testament at Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, for fifteen years and currently is Professor of Old Testament at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. He has helped with several Bible translations and is the author of books and articles.

Dr. Schultz is a recognized Bible scholar who communicates the Old Testament message with a refreshing contemporary approach. He retains scholarship within the framework of a challengingly spiritual approach. His comprehensive work on the Old Testament, The Old Testament Speaks, is an excellent source of more detailed consideration of this same portion of the Word.

No text, however, can ever substitute for a study of the Bible itself. Nor can the most capable of teachers apply the message of the Book to human hearts. The one who would benefit most from this study must first read the portion of the Word of God under consideration. Read it as many times as possible. Read it in various good translations. Read it; then read it again.

Since “the New is in the Old concealed, and the Old is in the New revealed,” a study of the Old Testament is an imperative foundation for clarity of both Old and New Testament Bible teaching. It will enrich a believer’s knowledge and life and make for better teaching to the glory of God.
