George Müller was born in 1805 in Kroppenstaedt, Prussia. Until his conversion in 1825, Müller gambled, drank heavily, and caused trouble. After his conversion, he began working as a missionary to the Jews in Europe—work which brought him to London, where he remained for most of the rest of his life. He also became associated with the Brethren movement while in England. He moved to Bristol in 1832.

In 1834, Müller helped found the Scriptural Knowledge Institution at Home and Abroad, an organization for publishing Bibles and promoting the efforts of missionaries around the world. In 1836, he began working with orphans in Bristol, opening orphanages for hundreds of children.

At the age of 70, Müller departed England to travel the world as a missionary. Within 17 years, he visited dozens of countries in Europe, the Americas, Australia, and the Far East. He died on March 10, 1898. By the time of his death, more than 10,000 children had been cared for in his orphanages and more than 20,000 educated at various schools he founded.
