Summary

Your Dead Sea Scrolls Revealed (DSSR) installation is dependent on a third-party software that allows Microsoft Windows -- and software applications such as Logos multimedia products like DSSR -- to play movies.  If the specific version of QuickTime that the multimedia product uses is not installed on your system or if the QuickTime version you have is incompatible with your multimedia application, then you may have problems with running the application's Setup or with playing your movies.

The makers of QuickTime software constantly update the software, so you may not have the software version that contains the specific files that the DSSR requires.  To work around this, we include a Setup for QuickTime that is compatible with the DSSR on the DSSR CD.  However, the version on the CD may become incompatible with Windows when Windows software is upgraded, as was the case with QuickTime version 2.0 which does not run on systems with Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP.

Today's DSSR CDs are shipping with QuickTime version 2.01 which will run on most Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP systems but not all.  (Note: Your particular system may have video-related software from other vendors that makes it incompatible.)  If you already have the 32-bit version of QuickTime installed and you attempt to install version 2.01 from the DSSR CD, the re-installation will overwrite the newer version and you may have to re-install the 32-bit version which will allow for version 2.01 to co-exist with it on your system.  Remember, if you try to install version 2.0 from an older DSSR CD, neither QuickTime nor DSSR nor any video-related applications will run.  If you have version 2.01 installed and you install the 32-bit version, choose the option to keep both versions on your system.

Note that other software products that you install may attempt to install a different version of QuickTime and thus may cause problems with the DSSR.  Although we include the most current QuickTime version with multimedia products when they are released, we cannot completely eliminate version conflicts.  Many different products are being released from many different software vendors at different times.  Your other products may attempt to install different versions of QuickTime which may cause subsequent problems with the DSSR.

DSSR Installation on Microsoft Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP Systems

If you cannot run Setup from the DSSR CD and your computer is running Microsoft Windows 98 or above, the problem may be that your system does not have QuickTime version for the DSSR installed or that a higher version has already been installed.

To install the version of QuickTime that comes with the DSSR CD and is compatible with the DSSR, complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the DSSR CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  2. From the Windows 95/98 desktop, click Start or from Windows 3.1 Program manger, click File. Select Run.
  3. Type x:\QTW201\SETUP.EXE (where x: is your CD-ROM drive letter name and QTW201 is the version of QuickTime for the DSSR) and click Ok.
  4. Follow the prompts, making sure to remove all previous versions of QuickTime that the program may find.

Re-installing the QuickTime software from the DSSR CD should resolve the problem with installing the DSSR.  If the problem continues, call Logos Technical Support for further instructions.

DSSR Movies on Microsoft Windows 95 Systems

If you cannot play DSSR movies on your Microsoft Windows 95 system, the cause may be your version of QuickTime movie player program.

Re-installing the QuickTime software from the DSSR CD should resolve the problem with playing movies from the DSSR.  If the problem continues, call Logos Technical Support for further instructions.

DSSR Movies Play Incorrectly

If you are experiencing problems with DSSR movies playing incorrectly, the cause may be your version of QuickTime software and the way it interacts with your computer's video driver.  To reset your computer's display properties, complete the following steps:

  1. From your Windows desktop, right-mouse click My Computer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click the Performance tab.
  4. Click Graphics.
  5. Drag the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to the left.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Close.
  8. Restart your system.

If you're using Windows 3.x, you will need to get a newer version of your video driver. You can usually do this by contacting the manufacturer of your video card and requesting the newest version of the drivers for your card.

DSSR Colors

If your computer's display properties are set to only 16 colors, the DSSR display of colors will appear to be distorted.  To resolve the color display problem, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Control Panel, click the Display control panel window.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Click the color palette menu.
The current settings will be something lower than 256 colors.
  4. Change the number to 256 or higher and click Ok.

The display of colors in the DSSR should appear correctly.
