Fix Problem with Missing Books After Using the Librarian Tool

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Summary

If you use the Librarian tool to copy a newer edition of a LLS book to your hard disk that replaces an older version of the same book, in some cases the book may not appear in your Library Browser when you run Logos.  The problem can be resolved by deleting the book from your hard disk and using the Librarian to copy the book from the CD to the hard disk again.

Symptoms

After you've used the Logos Librarian to copy a book from the CD to your hard disk andreplaced existing book files on the hard disk, the book does not appear in the Library Browser when you run Logos.

Note: If you did not use the Logos Librarian to replace an older book on your hard disk with a newer edition from a CD, then see the TechResponse article "Troubleshoot When Your Unlocked Books Aren't Displayed."

Cause

The problem is intermittent and may be file corruption associated with the Librarian tool when it is replacing book files on the hard disk with newer files from a CD.  Note that there is no known problem associated with relocating the book from a CD to the hard disk for the first time or with updating an edition by downloading the new book files.

Resolution (or) Workaround

To resolve the problem, complete the following steps:

  1. Use your system's file management utility to delete the book's data files (.lsf and .lix) on your hard disk.
    1. From the Windows Start button, select Find... or Search and click Files or Folders... .
    2. Find the book file and the index file for the book you want to delete from your hard disk.
      Note:
The book's data file names are displayed beneath the book list when you run Logos and from the Tools menu select Librarian... , then select the book.

In the Named: or Search for: text box, enter the book's data file name followed by a period and an asterisks.  For example, type:
oldbook.* (where "oldbook" is the data file name of the book you want to delete; in this example, the Find result would include Oldbook.lsf and Oldbook.lix).
In the Look in: text box, click the drop-down arrow and select your hard drive letter name, for example C:.
Click Find Now or Search Now.
    3. When the find results are displayed, scroll to the first book file to delete (for example, Oldbook.lsf).
Caution: Make sure that you select the exact LLS book data file name.  The Find result also may include other types of files that are not the file you want to delete, for example C:\My Documents\Oldbook.doc.
    4. Right-click your mouse on the book file name of the book to delete (for example, Oldbook.lsf) and click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    5. Right-click your mouse on the index file name of the book to delete (for example, Oldbook.lix) and click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    6. Quit Find.
  2. Insert the new book's CD in your CD-ROM drive and run Logos.
  3. From the Tools menu, select Librarian... .
  4. Select the book that you want to relocate to your hard disk and click Copy.
    Caution: Do not select Move.
  5. Select the same hard disk destination where the older book formerly was located (for example, C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS) and click OK
Note: If you change locations, you may need to rebuild the filemap when you run Logos.

Note: If you used your system's file management utility to select all the files on the CD and copy them to a book directory on your hard disk, you may need to delete the Lrspch.dat from the hard disk directory.
