Operating from hard drive only

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Summary

It is possible to locate all your LLS-format books on a hard disk and run your Logos Library System exclusively from your hard drive if the hard disk has enough space to accommodate all your books.

Note: Depending on your specific collection of books, you may need more than 2,500 megabytes of free hard disk space available to store the books on your hard disk.

To determine whether you can use Logos exclusively from your hard drive, first you must relocate all the books you want to use to the hard disk.  If you can relocate all your books to your hard disk, then you can modify Logos to operate exclusively from the hard drive.

"Move" your books to the Hard Disk

To relocate your books to the hard disk, complete the following steps:

Caution: Be sure to determine how much free space you have on your hard disk before attempting to move a large number of books.

  1. Use your Windows Explorer or File Manager to create a subdirectory or folder in the LOGOS20 directory where you will locate the books, for example C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS (where C: is your hard drive letter name, LOGOS20 is the directory where you installed Logos, and BOOKS is the directory where your books will be located).

  2. Insert the CD where your books currently are located in the CD-ROM drive and start Logos.
Make sure your books are visible in the Library Browser.

  3. From the Tools menu, click Librarian....
Logos will present a list of titles that can be "moved" (copied) to the hard disk.
Note: Checkmarks must appear in both the Books and the Indices options at the top of the dialog box.

  4. Use your mouse to select the books to be "moved." You may select multiple titles by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on each title.
As you select titles, the total bytes of hard disk space required will be displayed in the lower portion of the Librarian dialog box.

  5. Once you have selected the titles that you want located on your hard disk, click Copy
You will be asked for the directory to which the books should be copied, for example C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS.  When the correct directory is indicated, click OK

Logos will copy the appropriate book data files to your hard disk and change its system files to reflect where your books are located (on the hard disk) when you start Logos again.

Repeat this procedure with any additional CDs that contain books you want to make available from your hard disk.

Operate from your hard drive only

To completely remove the CD-ROM drive from all Logos operations, complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the LLS book CD Volume 1 in your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Use your Windows Explorer or File Manager to copy the following four files from the D:\BOOKS directory (where D: is your CD-ROM drive letter name) on the LLS book CD Volume 1 to the directory on your hard disk where you located your books (for example, C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS):

    LRSSHUSA.LIX and LRSSHUSA.LSF
    TIPS.LIX and TIPS.LSF
  3. Copy the MUSIC directory from the LLS book CD Volume 1  to the ROOT of your C: drive (where C: is your hard drive letter name).

  4. Use your text or word processor to open the C:\LRSYSTEM\Logos.map file (where C: is your hard drive letter name and LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos).

  5. Delete the line which refers to your CD-ROM drive (for example, D:\BOOKS= where D: is your CD-ROM drive letter name).

Caution: DO NOT leave a blank line where this reference was removed.

  6. Save the changes you made to your Logos.map file.

The next time you start Logos, the program will not look for a CD in your CD-ROM drive.
