  • Reinstalling Logos without a backup disk.
  • Reinstalling Logos with a backup disk.
  • Troubleshooting when Setup or Update will not run.
  • Moving Logos to a new hard drive.
  • Troubleshooting if you’re missing books.
  • Copying books to a hard disk.

Reinstalling Logos without a backup disk

The easiest way to get you working may be to simply run Update.exe to install the basic Logos system, and then re-unlock your books by calling Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS.

Note: The Update program is located on the LLS book CD Volume 1. If you don’t have the set of LLS book CD volumes, call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS to order the most recent CD-ROM volumes.

To resinstall Logos without a backup disk, follow these steps:

  1. From Windows 95 or above, click Start and then Run.

  2. Type D:\UPDATE (where D: is your CD-ROM drive letter name) and click OK.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

  4. After the update has completed successfully, start Logos.

  5. Logos will start with no books unlocked. Call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS and tell them that you have spoken with Technical Support and you need to re-unlock your books because the installation floppy isn't working.

This procedure should reinstall Logos as well as restore your unlocked books.

Caution: When your unlocks have been restored, make a LOGOS Backup Disk.  Insert a 3.5-inch double-sided double-density blank formatted floppy disk in your floppy drive.  Run Logos and from the Tools menu select Backup Logos System Files... .  Change the drive letter and backup file name (Logos.lsb) if necessary, then click OK.

Reinstalling Logos with a backup disk

To fully reinstall Logos without calling Customer Service, first make a backup of your Logos system files. Insert a 3.5-inch double-sided double-density blank formatted floppy disk in your floppy drive.  Run Logos and from the Tools menu select Backup Logos System Files... .  Change the drive letter and backup file name (Logos.lsb) if necessary, then click OK.. When you are ready to reinstall Logos, simply run Update.exe from the most recent LLS book CD Volume 1.  When Update has completed successfully, run Logos and from the Tools menu select Restore System Files.

Troubleshooting when Setup or Update will not run

The most likely reason Setup or Update won't run is that you have programs that are running in the background such as Microsoft Office, screen savers or virus detection software. These types of programs interfere with the Logos installation and must be turned off. You will probably have to remove their shortcuts from the Startup directory and restart Windows to keep them from loading upon startup. Call us if you need further assistance.

Moving Logos to a new hard disk

The easiest way to move Logos to another hard disk is to delete it from its current location and then reinstall Logos to the new location.  Logos can be installed to only one location in your computer system or you may experience problems with system conflicts.

  1. Make a LOGOS Backup Disk so that you can restore your book unlocks after you reinstall Logos. Insert a 3.5-inch double-sided double-density blank formatted floppy disk in your floppy drive.  Run Logos and from the Tools menu select Backup Logos System Files... .  Change the drive letter and backup file name (Logos.lsb) if necessary, then click OK.

  2. Delete the LRSYSTEM and LOGOS20 directories (where LRSYSTEM and LOGOS20 are where you installed Logos) from your hard drive.

  3. Delete the Logos20.ini file from your Windows directory, for example C:\WINDOWS\Logos20.ini (where C: is your hard drive letter name).

  4. From the Windows desktop, select Start and Run then type win.ini and click OK.

  5. Click Search and Find, then type lrsystems and click Find.

  6. Scroll down to LRSYSTEMS where you should see text that is similar to the following:

    [LRSystems]
    System=C:\LRSYSTEM
    LLS=C:\LOGOS20\LOGOS.EXE
    ProductCode0=006-00680-0106

  7. Delete entire section from and including [LRSystems] to the next section indicated in square brackets ([ ]), leaving a blank line between the remaining sections.

  8. From the File menu, click Save before closing the Win.ini file.

  9. Reinstall Logos. Run Update.exe from the most recent upgrade of Logos CD-ROM volumes.  When Update has completed successfully, run Logos and from the Tools menu select Restore System Files to restore your unlocks from your LOGOS Backup Disk.

Troubleshooting if you’re missing books

If you do not see some of your books in your Logos library browser, there are several common reasons for the problem.

  1. Logos considers the book(s) as "locked."
If you run Logos and click the Tools menu Unlock Books or Collections command, and you see the book(s) you're looking for in the Unlockable Titles list, then this is the case.

You'll either need to run the Setup.exe program from the original floppy disks or CD that you received when you bought the product, use your LOGOS Backup Disk if you have one to restore your Logos system files (for example, Logos.lsb) from the Tools menu Restore System Backup command, or call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS and ask about re-unlocking your book(s).

  2. Logos cannot locate or recognize the book data files for the book(s).
If you can't see the book(s) you're looking for in the Unlockable Titles list, then Logos most likely can't see them when it starts up. There are several things to check if this is the situation.

First, determine where the book data files ("books") that Logos is looking for are located. (For example, they might be located on your hard disk, on your LLS book CD Volume 1 or Volume x, or on a LLS collection or product CD). If they are on a CD, insert the correct CD in your CD-ROM drive and run Logos.

Second, run Logos and select the Tools menu Rebuild Filemap command. Check to see if the location (drive letter name and directory) of the missing book(s) is included in the Search List on the right-hand side.

    • If the location of the missing book(s) is not in the Search List, click the drop-arrow in the lower-left corner and use the smaller arrows if necessary to change the drive to the drive that the book(s) are located on, and then navigate to the directory that the book(s) are in, for example BOOKS on our CD-ROMs. As you move through the drives and directories, the upper-left "Directory to Scan" field will change to reflect your location. When it shows the directory where your books are located, click Add. The drive and directory you selected should be added to the right-hand Search List field. Click Scan and Logos will then re-scan the map file. After it tells you how many books it found, click Ok and then click Restart Logos Now when prompted. When Logos restarts, it should be able to find the books. (However, they may still need to be unlocked; see Reason #1.)

    • If the location of the missing book(s) is included in the Search List, make sure that the correct CD is in the drive and restart Logos. Check the Unlockable Titles list (see Reason #1) again. If the book(s) still are not available, the CD may not be reading correctly. Contact us via e-mail or telephone.

  3. Books have been removed from the Library Browser with the Tool menu Title Librarian command's Remove button.
If this is the case, then you can perform the following steps to rebuild your map file.
    1. In Windows 95, double-click the My Computer icon, double-click the drive where Logos is installed, (usually C:) and double-click the LRSYSTEM directory. In Windows 3.x, from the Main program group open File Manager, select the drive where Logos is installed (usually C:), and select the LRSYSTEM directory.

    2. Find a file named either LOGOS or LOGOS.MAP, select and delete it.

    3. Start Logos.

    4. Logos will display an error message.  Click Scan. Add all of the drives and directories where your books are located (for example, your CD-ROM and hard disk drive letter names) as described in the first part of Reason #2.

Copying books to a hard disk

To copy books from the CD to the hard disk, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the CD where the books you want to use from your hard disk are located and then run Logos.

  2. From the Tools menu, click Librarian. Select the book you want to relocate to the hard disk. To select multiple books, press the CTRL key while you click your selections.

  3. Click Copy.

  4. Select the location on the hard disk where you want to locate the book(s), and click Ok.
Note: You can use the default location. Also note that if you copy an updated edition to replace an older edition on your hard disk, then you may need to delete the book files on your hard disk before you copy them from the CD.

The books should then be available from your hard disk.
