Understand LLS Book Unlocks
Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above
Overview
You need Logos, the LLS book files, and an "unlock" to use a LLS book.
To use a LLS electronic book, three things are required:
- Logos software (for example, Logos Bible Software which is referred to as "Logos") must be correctly installed on your computer and it must be able to locate your books.
- The book data files (.lsf and .lix) must be available on a CD in your CD-ROM drive, on your hard disk, or on a network drive.
- The book must be "unlocked."
Books are available in your system as locked or unlocked.
LLS books consist of two data files that are indicated by .lsf and .lix file name extensions. Most LLS books initially are made available to your computer system in one of three ways: on a product or "LLS Collection" CD, such as the Bible Reference Series Standard Collection, on one of the LLS book CD volumes, or as files that can be downloaded from the Internet. (Downloading transports the book files from the Internet to your computer's hard disk.) Although the book may be available in your system, it is "locked" or unusable until it is "unlocked" electronically. A locked book is similar to a shrink-wrapped book before the shrink-wrap is removed. Regardless of whether the book is purchased or free, it must be unlocked before it can be used. Unlock records for your books are stored in the Logos system files in your computer system.
Book unlocks are purchased in collections or as single titles.
Books can be purchased as individual titles or as part of a "product CD" or a "boxed" collection. Collections are selected titles that the publisher groups together to sell. For example, Logos Research Systems, Inc. has grouped together the Bible Reference Series and Scholar's Library collections for people who do various types of Bible study, research and teaching. Book collections are the easiest and usually the most economical way to build your LLS electronic book library. The price of a collection can be less than purchasing titles individually. With more than one book in your library, Logos is a much more powerful tool.
A Setup program or an Unlock procedure unlocks the books.
When you purchase a book collection and run its Setup program to install the product, all the books associated with that product are unlocked. When you buy books that are not grouped together as a collection, in most cases you will perform an Unlock procedure to unlock them.
The unlocking process starts from the Logos software Tools menu Unlock Books or Collections command, from the Logos Unlock Assistant program, or from the Logos Web site at http://www.logos.com/ when you place an Internet order. When you unlock books by calling the Unlock Hotline, you must run Logos or run the Logos Unlock Assistant (UNLOCKER.EXE) to complete the Unlock procedure and record the unlocks in your Logos system files.
Logos system files record the unlocks.
Logos maintains a record of the books that have been unlocked and stores the record in your Logos system files. The Logos system files are stored by default in C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name). It is very important to use the Tools menu Backup Logos System Files command so that the unlock records can be stored on a floppy disk and restored to your hard disk if necessary. You may need to restore your system files for a variety of reasons, for example when your system files are deleted or damaged or when your hard disk fails or is replaced. If you purchase a new computer and install Logos on it, you'll need to restore your system files to use your library. With a backup on a floppy disk, you can restore the unlocks for your books easily at any time.
