Troubleshoot When Your Unlocked Books Aren't Displayed

Troubleshoot When Your Unlocked Books Aren't Displayed

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Overview

If your unlocked Logos Library System (LLS) books do not appear in your Library Browser when you run Logos, the problem may have one of several possible causes.

To start troubleshooting the problem, from the Tools menu click Unlock Books and Collections. If the book title is listed, then you know that Logos does not recognize the book's unlock. Refer to section "C" below.

A. Your LLS book may not be directly located in your system.

Make sure that the book files for your LLS book are directly located in your system. First, determine where the book is available, for example if it is on a CD such as the "LLS Collection" or LLS book CD Volume 3.

Note: Each book consists of two data files, indicated by file name extensions .lsf and .lix. The book files can be located on any drive in your system, including one or more hard drives, CD-ROM drives, or network drives.

If the book is on a CD, load the CD where the book is available in your CD-ROM drive and re-start Logos. If you don't know what CD the book is on and you have multiple CDs and one CD-ROM drive, you will need to load a CD and re-start Logos for each CD where you have unlocked books.

Note: You can relocate books from a CD to your hard disk using the Librarian... command from the Tools menu.

If the book is available on your hard disk such as in C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS, then you may need to update your Filemap. See section "B."

B. Your Logos system files may not indicate to Logos where to find your unlocked books.

If you can find the book files but Logos cannot find them, your Filemap may need to be updated. Run Logos and from the Tools menu click Rebuild Filemap... to make sure that Logos is searching all the locations (drives and subdirectories or folders) where your book files are located. The Search List is on the right side of the Filemap dialog box. To add locations, select the path and click Add. When all the locations to search are listed, click Scan. Restart Logos when prompted.

If the book still does not appear in the Library Browser, from the Tools menu click Unlock Books and Collections. If the book is listed, see item "C" below.

If you know that your book files are unlocked and they are on the CD or hard disk location listed in the Filemap dialog box Search List and you know that you have the correct CD loaded, then your CD-ROM drive may not be reading the CD correctly. See the TechResponse article "Maintain Your Logos Library System" for instructions to clean your CD. If cleaning does not solve the problem, then call Technical Support at (360) 685-2337 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. within the continental US or email Tech@logos.com to ask about a replacement CD.

C. Logos may not be able to locate the unlock records in your Logos system files.

Make sure that Logos can find the Logos system files where your unlocks are recorded. The Logos system files are installed by default to C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name).

If you have deleted any files from the LRSYSTEM directory, you may have deleted the record of your unlocked books. To restore the record, load your LOGOS Backup Disk in your floppy drive and from the Tools menu, click Restore System Files from Backup.... Change the default drive letter and backup filename if necessary and click OK to restore the record of your unlocks. (If you do not have a backup disk, you will have to call each LLS book publisher to ask about recovering your unlocks.)

If you have changed the location of your Logos system files from where Logos was installed, you may need to redirect your computer system where to look for the Logos system files. For example if you moved the C:\LRSYSTEM folder by dragging the folder to a different location or if you renamed the LRSYSTEM directory, your computer system will no longer look for the Logos system files where the Logos installation directed it to look. The LRSYSTEM= statement in the win.ini file in your Windows directory may need to be changed to reflect where your Logos system files now are located. See the TechResponse article "Direct Your Computer System to Find the Logos System Files."

If you have lawfully installed Logos on more than one computer and your books appear in one system and not in another, you may need to update your Logos system files in the other computer. Run Logos on the computer where the books appear, insert your LOGOS Backup Disk in the floppy drive, and from the Tools menu click Backup Logos System Files. Change the default drive letter and backup filename if necessary and click OK to make a current copy of your Logos system files. Next, run Logos on the other computer. Load the current backup disk in the floppy drive, and then from the Tools menu click Restore System Files from Backup. Change the default drive letter and backup filename if necessary and click OK to update the system with your most current Logos system files.

D. The Logos system files may be inaccessible.

Finally, if your Logos system files have been damaged or deleted, or if your hard disk fails or is replaced, you will need to restore your system files to be able to use your unlocked books.

You can "re-unlock" or recover your unlocked books if you restore your unlocks from your LOGOS Backup Disk and if the backup disk was updated every time you unlocked books from any LLS book publisher. Run Logos and load the current backup disk in your floppy drive, then from the Tools menu click Restore System Files from Backup.... Change the default drive letter and backup filename if necessary and click OK. If you do not have the disk or if you have not maintained it, call the LLS book publisher(s) to ask about recovering your unlocked books.

To ask about recovering books purchased from Logos Research Systems, Inc., call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS. Note that policies about "re-unlocks" or recovering unlocks for books vary with individual publishers. The publisher may unlock only the books for which it has a record that you purchased, and you may pay a service charge to have the books re-unlocked.
