What You Must Know about Managing LLS
The information in this article applies to the following products:
- Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above
Summary
The following summary is the information that you must know to manage your Logos Library System:
- Install Logos.
If you simply copy the Logos software, Logos will not be configured correctly in your computer system. The programs SETUP.EXE or UPDATE.EXE install Logos. Logos must be installed to only one place in your computer system. If you add a hard disk to your system and want to move Logos, you will have to backup your Logos system files and then completely remove Logos from the old location and re-install Logos to the new one. Disable anti-virus software before installing.
- Install Logos to the default directory names LOGOS20 and LRSYSTEM; do not delete files unless you are sure what they are.
If you rename the directories or folders, if you delete certain files from the directories, or if you drag the folders around your desktop and drop them in different locations, then chances are that Logos will not run properly.
- After you install Logos or unlock new books, backup your Logos system files.
Books must be unlocked to be useable and the Logos system files in the LRSYSTEM directory are the records of your unlocked books. If your Logos system files are inaccessible and you don't have a backup disk, you risk losing your entire library. You'll need your LOGOS Backup Disk if your system ever "crashes" or your hard disk "fails," if the Logos system files are damaged or deleted, if you replace your hard drive, if you buy a new computer, or if you need to work from an additional computer. It can be time-consuming and expensive to have to recover your unlocks from LLS book publishers, and you may be unable to recover some unlocks only if you re-purchase the books.
To backup LLS licenses: insert a 3-1/2" floppy disk, or other removable media. Click on Tools | Backup Logos System Files. Change the drive to the floppy or other disk drive and click OK to save the LOGOS.LSB file to that location.
To restore LLS licenses: insert the removable media containing the LOGOS.LSB file. Click on Tools | Restore System Files from Backup. Change the drive if necessary and double-click on the LOGOS.LSB file in the large left pane. Click Yes if prompted.
Note: The license backup file (Logos.lsb) does not include Logos preferences or settings such as your customized workspaces, associated titles or keylinks. To be able to restore these settings, copy C:\WINDOWS\Logos20.ini (where C: is your hard drive letter name) to your LOGOS Backup Disk. Note that in some cases, restoration of the Logos20.ini copy may be unsuccessful if the file is corrupted or if you did not restore the file to the original system.
- Keep the backup disk in a safe place.
Prevent the disk from being exposed to magnetization, heat, direct sunlight, moisture, or dust. By the way, you'll also need to take care of your CDs and keep them clean, too.
- Backup your Logos system files on the same disk every time you unlock a book from any LLS book publisher.
Information regarding your unlocked books is held together in the system files in the LRSYSTEM directory regardless of the publisher of the LLS product or individually unlocked book. When you make a Logos system backup it records the unlock information for all of the products you have unlocked as of the time of the backup. Use the same disk every time to ensure that you will be able to restore the most recent and complete list of unlocked books.
- If you have lawfully installed Logos on more than one computer, make sure that your systems all use the same Logos system files.
Whenever you unlock books, click Backup Logos System Files... from the Tools menu on the current computer and then load the backup disk in your other system(s), run Logos and click Restore Logos System Files from Backup... from the Tools menu.
- To use a book, remember to load the CD where the book is located in your CD-ROM drive (or use the Librarian... command to relocate the book from the CD to your hard disk).
Your book files (.lsf and .lix) must be located in a drive on your computer system before you can use the book. If your books are on multiple CDs and you have one CD-ROM drive, then you must load each CD where there are books you want to use and re-start Logos for each CD you load. Note that you can use books located on a CD and on your hard disk in the same Logos session. You can use books located on any of the drives in your computer system, including a network, in the same Logos session. The Rebuild Filemap command from the Tools menu tells Logos where to search your drives for books.
- Use the Tools menu Librarian... command to relocate books.
If you copy or move book files by dragging folders or using other copy or move utilities, Logos won't recognize where your books have been relocated.
- If the installation or re-installation instructions confuse you or you need to talk rather than e-mail tech@logos.com, call Technical Support at (360) 685-2337.
