Understand the Three Basic Parts to LLS
The information in this article applies to the following products:
- Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above
Overview
The LLS system has three basic parts.
Think of your Logos Library System (LLS) as having three basic parts: software, system files and books.
- Software
The Logos software consists of the computer program (LOGOS.EXE) and supporting files. The software is installed by default to a directory or folder named C:\LOGOS20 (where C: is your hard drive letter name). The software is what manages your Logos session on the computer. Logos displays your workspace and library, opens your books and works with them, and provides the functionality and features that make Logos such a powerful tool.
Logos software is included with Logos products. The most current version of Logos is available for downloading free of charge from the Logos Web site http://www.logos.com. (Downloading transports files from the Internet to your computer's hard disk.)
- System Files
Logos software works with the Logos system files to determine what books are useable, where the books are located, and how to interact between books. The system files are installed by default to a directory or folder named C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name).
Specific Logos system files store the record of what books are in your library. Without these files, you have no useable books. It is very important to use Backup Logos System Files... from the Tools menu to backup the system files onto a floppy disk every time you add books to your LLS library so that your hard disk is not the only place where there is a record of the useable books in your library. This is to protect your investment in books should your hard disk become damaged or unusable.
- Books
The software cannot do anything useful until you have LLS books in your library.
Although LLS books are available on CDs or as downloaded files from the Internet, these books are like shrink-wrapped volumes on store shelves because they are not yet useable in your library. No single CD can house all of the published LLS books, so the available books are located on multiple CDs known as "volumes". Like shrink-wrapped books, the available books are unusable or "locked" until a computer procedure electronically removes the shrink-wrap to "unlock" them. Your library consists of your unlocked books. You can easily add books to your library from the books that are available on CDs. To add books, you simply purchase and then unlock them. Publishers also sometimes offer "free unlocks" which means that you do not have to purchase certain books prior to unlocking them.
To build a library, it's best to start with the purchase of a "boxed" collection. Boxed collections are selected titles that the publisher groups together to sell. For example, Logos Research Systems, Inc. sells the Bible Reference Series and Scholar's Library collections for people who do various types of Bible study, research and teaching. Book collections are the easiest way to begin building your library. Collections can be the most economical way to build your library because the price usually is less than if you purchase the titles individually. Because a collection normally includes more than one book, you benefit from how Logos interacts among books. As you decide to add books to your library, you can upgrade collections or purchase single titles and then unlock them.
As with any library, LLS books are an investment worthy of protection. Remember, the Logos software determines what books you have unlocked by reading your Logos system files. If this information is lost for any reason, such as if you replace your computer or hard drive or when your hard disk "crashes" or the files are damaged or deleted, you must restore the Logos system files to regain use of the books in your library. You can do this easily if you make a backup of the Logos system files onto a floppy disk every time you unlock books from any LLS book publisher. Use any 3.5-inch double-sided double-density blank formatted disk, but use the same floppy disk whenever you backup the system files. When you run Logos, you backup or restore your Logos system files from the Tools menu.
Caution: Although publishers may be willing to help you recover your unlocked books if you do not have a backup, they may not have complete records of your purchases and you may have to pay a service charge to "re-unlock" your books. Depending on the publisher's records or replacement policies, it is possible that you could have to buy some or all of the books again to replace your library. Remember, without a current complete backup on a floppy disk, you risk losing your library.
Each part requires configuration in your computer system.
A Logos product's Setup program configures the three basic parts of LLS to work in your computer system. When you run Setup, the program:
- Installs your Logos software.
- Updates the Logos system files to unlock your books and make them useable.
- Tells Logos where your books are located.
What version of LLS software that Setup installs and what books Setup unlocks depend on the Setup program for the product that you are installing.
Your software must be installed.
You must run Setup (SETUP.EXE) or Update (UPDATE.EXE) to install Logos. If you simply copy the Logos software, the three basic parts of your Logos Library System will not be correctly configured to work in your computer system.
The Logos software and system files are installed to two directories or folders named by default as C:\LOGOS20 and C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name). You are encouraged to accept the default directory or folder name when you install Logos. Avoid renaming, deleting or moving the directory/folder or its contents.
- Initial installations
SETUP.EXE for most "boxed" collections is available on the LLS Collection product CD. (Your initial Setup program may vary depending on what product you purchase. Note that your Setup may be available from the first disk of a set of floppy disks, from files that you downloaded to your hard disk, or you may have the Update program instead of Setup.) Usually Setup both installs Logos and unlocks the books that you have purchased as well as any free books included with Logos.
A Setup program for a "new user" also is available to download from the Logos Web site. However the downloaded version of Logos only unlocks the free guide books that are included with the Logos software.
- Updated installations
The downloaded version of Logos from the Logos Web site installs the most current shipping version of Logos, either for a free update to a "prior installation" or for a trial or full version to a "new user." This version may be newer than the Logos software you install from your LLS CD collection or volume. You can use the downloaded version of Setup to update your Logos software to the newest version and retain your current unlocks.
If you do not have Internet access, then you can run Update (UPDATE.EXE) to install a newer version of Logos. You may already have the Update program on a CD volume 1, or the most current versions of Update and LLS book CD volumes are available from Logos Research Systems, Inc. at a minimal charge to help cover production and shipping costs.
Your Logos system files must be present.
The Logos system files are stored in a directory or folder named by default as C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name). You are strongly encouraged to use the default name LRSYSTEM when you install Logos. Do not rename, delete or move the LRSYSTEM directory/folder or its contents. Do not use long file names, such as C:\Program Files (Logos version 2.x is a 16-bit application). Logos is designed to manage even the most complex assortment of books, and this task is greatly simplified if you use the recommended names for Logos directories or folders. Setup allows you to change the defaults only because your hard drive letter may be different from the default, for example D:.
Note that Unlocks are based on the Logos system files that are present on the computer that you are using. However, your unlocked books can be made available for your personal use on an additional computer, such as for a laptop in addition to a PC at home or work. (See the Logos product licensing agreement to determine lawful uses.) If you have an additional computer or if you purchase a new computer or replace your hard disk, you will need a current LOGOS Backup Disk from your original computer to use your library on another computer or hard disk.
Your unlocked books must be accessible to your system and software.
- Your books must be present on one or more of your computer system's drives.
Logos system files tell the Logos software where in your computer system to search for your books, but the books also must be physically present on a drive in your computer system. Each book consists of two data files indicated by file name extensions .lsf and .lix. The books must be located where Logos can find them in your computer system, either on a CD in a CD-ROM drive, or on a hard disk or network drive. Logos can search for books that are located on CDs or disks on multiple CD-ROM, network or hard disk drives.
Logos can search for books in more than one place during the same session. For example, you can use books that are located both on a CD in the CD-ROM drive and on your hard disk. However, if your system has only one CD-ROM drive and your books are available from multiple CDs, Logos can search only the CD that is loaded in your CD-ROM drive until you load a different CD and re-start Logos.
Remember: If you have one CD-ROM drive and books on multiple CDs, then only the books that are available on the CD that is loaded in your CD-ROM drive will appear in your Library Browser. To see books from another CD, you must load that CD and re-start Logos or you must use the Librarian... command to copy the books from that CD to your hard disk.
- Your Logos Filemap must tell Logos where to search for the books.
Logos uses the directories or folders that are listed in your Filemap to locate books. (Filemap refers to the Logos.map file in your LRSYSTEM directory.) To see where Logos is searching for books or to direct Logos where you want it to search for books, run Logos and click Rebuild Filemap... from the Tools menu.
When you run Logos, the unlocked books that you can use from the CD that is in your CD-ROM drive or from the other drives in your system where books may be located appear in the Library Browser window at the left of your screen.
The locked books that are available on the CD you are using when you run Logos appear when you click Unlock Books and Collections from the Tools menu. To look for locked books that are available on a different CD, load the CD and re-start Logos before you click Unlock Books and Collections.
Note: You can see the locked books that are available from all the CD volumes without having to load each CD individually if you run the Logos Unlock Assistant program (UNLOCKER.EXE). The program is available with Logos version 2.1f or later, or it can be downloaded from the Logos Web site http://www.logos.com/. Logos Unlock Assistant also can show you a list of all your unlocked books at one time, even if they are located on multiple CDs. However, the locked books that are listed may not be available in your system if you do not have the CD volumes where they are located.
- The Librarian command must be used to relocate your books from the CD to your hard disk.
To use books from your hard disk rather than from the CD, you must run Logos and use the Librarian... command (also referred to as the "Title Librarian") to relocate the books. If you change the location of your book files from the CD to your hard disk using other utilities, such as dragging folders or using Windows Explorer or File Manger copy or move commands, your Logos system files may be unable to tell Logos where your unlocked books are located.
You usually can eliminate having to load more than one CD during your Logos session if you copy the books that you use most frequently from the CD to your hard disk. From the Tools menu, click Librarian..., select the book, and click Copy. Select the destination and click OK to copy the book files from the CD to your hard disk. When the book is located on your hard disk, usually you will notice that access and searches are faster. However, books require significant disk space, so it is best to copy only the books that you use most.
Hint to novice users: If you select a book from the CD and click Move, a "read only" error message is displayed. CD-ROM drives are "read only" which means that you cannot "write" to them and thus change something on the compact disc itself. A Move would require the drive to "write" to the CD to delete the book from it.
To free the hard disk space and use the books from the CD again, run Windows Explorer or File Manager and use the utility's delete command to remove the book files from the hard disk. (Librarian commands cannot be used to move books from the hard disk back to the CD or to remove books to delete them from the hard disk and free disk space.) Be careful to delete only the .lsf and .lix files related to the book title; do not delete other Logos files.
To relocate a book from one hard disk location to another hard disk location, from the Tools menu, click Librarian..., select the book, and click Move. Select the destination and click OK to relocate the book files to another hard disk location to delete the book files from the original hard disk location.
Caution: Especially in cases where larger numbers of books are involved, the Move procedure may appear to work and yet Logos will be unable to display the books (because the Lrspch.dat file is controlling where Logos looks for books and it needs to be reset). If you have this problem, call Technical Support at (360) 685-2337.
