Relocate LLS Books

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Overview

You may want to relocate your LLS books for various reasons, including:

  • You have several books located on different CDs and you want to relocate one or more books to your hard disk to avoid having to re-load CDs and re-start Logos while you are working.
  • You want to use books from your hard disk, where book access and searches run faster.
  • You have books located on your hard disk and you added a new hard drive to your computer system where you want to relocate some of the books now.

If you relocate your most frequently-used books from multiple CDs to your hard disk, you can reduce or eliminate having to reload book CDs and re-start Logos while you are working. The more books you can use from your hard disk, the faster your access and searches will be. However, books require significant amounts of disk space. The number of books you can relocate to your hard disk will depend on how much hard disk space is available and on how much space you want to use for books.

Each book consists of two data files indicated by filename extensions .lsf and .lix. Both files for each book title must be present on a drive in your computer system. As you select book titles from the Librarian dialog box, the book file names and locations and the total bytes of space required are displayed in the dialog box. (If you click on the Books or Indices checkbox at the top of the dialog box, you can see the total bytes required for the separate files.) When you use the Librarian command to copy or move a book, you see what location Logos currently is using to read your book files, and when you relocate the files your Filemap automatically is updated.

Instructions

Note: To select multiple books, press the CTRL key and continue to hold the key while you select book titles.

Relocate Books from CD to Hard Disk

To relocate a book from a CD to a hard disk, first load the CD where the book is located in the CD-ROM drive and run Logos. From the Tools menu, click Librarian... . Select the book to relocate and click Copy. Select the destination drive and directory or folder where you want the book relocated, for example C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS and click OK. If you have books to relocate from another CD and you have only one CD-ROM drive, for each CD you will load the CD and re-start Logos before using the Librarian command.

Relocate Books from Hard Disk to Hard Disk

To relocate a book from one hard disk to another hard disk, first load the CD where the book is located in the CD-ROM drive and run Logos. From the Tools menu, click Librarian.... Select the book to relocate and click Move so that the disk space where the book was previously located will be freed.

Note: You cannot move a book from a CD or copy a book to a CD-ROM because the CD-ROM drive cannot "write" to the disc to delete or add files.

Select the destination hard drive and directory or folder, for example D:\BOOKS, and click OK.

Caution: If you are relocating both the Logos software and your books, see the TechResponse article "Move Logos and Your Library to a Different Hard Disk."

Hint to novice users: You cannot move or copy a book from your hard disk to a CD-ROM (read only memory) nor relocate books from a CD-ROM to a CD-ROM. Because you cannot modify a CD-ROM, books on that CD always will be available as long as your CD-ROM drive can read the CD. Remember that if you download an updated edition of a book from the Internet, you cannot copy or move the new book to the CD-ROM to replace the older version. The only way to get the newer edition of the book on a CD is to order an updated LLS book CD volume if a volume with the new book on it has been published.

Remove Books from Hard Disk or from Library Browser

To remove or delete book files from your hard disk and free hard disk space, use your Windows Explorer or File Manager utility's Delete command from the File menu.

Note: The Remove button in the Librarian dialog box only removes the book title from your Library Browser. Remove does not physically delete the book files from a CD or hard disk, or free hard disk space.

Before you delete any book files that you have downloaded from the Internet, remember that the CD you have may not have the newer book files on it. If the new edition is available on a CD volume, you may want to update your set of CD volumes before deleting the book from your hard disk.

After relocating books, you may need to rebuild your Filemap so that Logos searches the new locations for your books. From the Tools menu, click Rebuild Filemap.... If necessary, select the drive and directory for each new location to include and click Add. When you have finished, click Scan.
