Set or Change Associated Titles

Set or Change Associated Titles

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Overview

The Associated Titles feature in Logos automatically changes the active or linked window when you have selected a Go to Reference command that asks for a scripture location that is not available in the current book. You can indicate the book titles you want associated or change associations in the "Preferences" section of your Logos20.ini file. The Logos20.ini file is installed to your Windows directory or folder when you install Logos.

For example, if you have associated the books KJV and KJVAPOC, then if you use the Go to Reference command to look for "Additions to Esther" from the King James Version, the book automatically will change to the King James Apocrypha and the appropriate scripture. If you have associated NA26 and LXX, Logos automatically will switch from the Nestle Aland to the Septaugint when an Old Testament reference is requested and the Septaugint will switch to the NA26 when a New Testament reference is requested.

Note: If you associate one book that is a subset of another, once the larger book has been activated, that title will remain active. For example, associating NIV and NRSV will switch to the NRSV when an Apocryphal reference is requested, but it never will switch back to the NIV because all references in the NIV exist in the NRSV.

Instructions

To change the associated titles, follow these steps:

  1. If you are running Logos, click the close box to quit Logos.

  2. Edit the Logos20.ini file in your Windows directory or folder.

    From Windows 95/98/NT:
    Click Start and then click Run....
    From Windows 3.1 Program Manager:
    Click File and then click Run....

    Type logos20.ini (The file is located by default in C:\WINDOWS where C: is your hard disk drive letter).

    Your text editor, for example Notepad, will open the Logos20.ini file for editing.

    Note: If the Logos20.ini file does not have an associated program to open it, you will need to select a text editor (such as Notepad) or a word processing program (such as Word) to associate with the file and then try opening the file again.

    For Windows 95/98/NT:
    You will be prompted by an Open With dialog box to select a program.
    Select Notepad or any text editor or word processing program and click OK.
    Repeat Step 2.

    For Windows 3.1:
    Click OK to leave the error message box.
    Click File and then click Associate....
    Select Notepad or any text editor or word processing program and click OK.
    Repeat Step 2.

  3. Locate the section in the Logos20.ini file labeled [Preferences].

    In the following example, the key words indicated in boldface here control the Associated Titles preferences feature:
    NumAssociationLists=2
    AssociatedTitles0=NA26, BHSMORPH
    AssociatedTitles1=KJV, KJVAPOC

    The number in the NumAssociationLists line specifies how many associated title lines will follow. In our example, it is two lines. The AssociatedTitles line numbering begins with 0. In our example, the first pairing is NA26 and BHSMORPH and the second pairing is KJV, KJVAPOC. Any number of Bibles or commentaries may be paired in any way.

  4. Use your text editor's features to modify the NumAssociationLists line and the AssociatedTitles0 through however many lines you need.

  5. When your changes are completed, save the modifications to the Logos20.ini file. From the File menu, click Save.

Caution: The association of titles is at the time of need only, when the Go to Reference command asks for a scripture location that is not in the current book. The first book in the AssociatedTitles line pairing is the book that gets associated. For example, in the following preferences:
NumAssociationLists=2
AssociatedTitles0=NA26, BHSMORPH
AssociatedTitles1=NA26, LXX

a jump from the LXX Old Testament will open the NA26, but a jump from the NA26 to the Old Testament will open the BHSMORPH because it is listed first.
