Overview

Fast-Start workspaces are a Quick Start feature that that tailors your session for specific Bible study activities and products. The workspace is the selection and arrangement of open books, notes and search results on your screen. It can be compared with the books and tools that you would arrange on your desk before working on a study. A well-arranged workspace can greatly enhance how you work.

Based on the Logos Bible Reference Series or Scholar’s Library book collections, the Fast-Start workspace opens, arranges, links and sets the books and features that many customers will find useful to do the task at hand.

This article provides general instructions about how to use any of the Fast-Start workspaces.

Instructions

Load a Fast-Start Workspace

To load a workspace, follow these steps:

  1. From the File menu, click Load Workspace....

  2. Double-click the workspace name you want to load.

Each type of workspace is available for two screen resolutions: 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600. Select the higher resolution if your monitor has a Super VGA adapter or better. Try loading both versions to see which version is best for you.

Depending on your computer system, you may want to modify window sizes and locations to fit your particular screen. See Modify a Fast-Start Workspace to save the Fast-Start workspace as a new workspace and then adapt it to your needs.

Caution if you are using a 640 x 480 display setting: Fast-Start workspaces are designed to open multiple display areas for books. To avoid excessive scrolling of windows, changing your computer’s display resolution to a higher setting before loading a Fast-Start workspace is recommended. See your Microsoft Windows User Guide or computer operations guide for instructions to change your display properties settings.

Modify a Fast-Start Workspace

You can use a Fast-Start workspace as a model for creating a new workspace that you can modify. When you modify a Fast-Start workspace and save your changes, saving the workspace with a new name is recommended. Doing this will make it easier to restore the original Fast-Start workspace if necessary.

To modify a Fast-Start workspace, follow these steps:

  1. From the File menu, click Load Workspace....

  2. Double-click the Fast-Start workspace name you want to load.

  3. From the File menu, click Save Workspace As....

  4. Type the new name and click OK.

  5. Make your changes to the workspace.

  6. From the File menu, click Save Workspace.

When you select Load Workspace from the File menu, your modified workspace will appear on the workspace list in addition to the Fast-Start workspace.

Replace a Book

You can easily replace a Fast-Start workspace book, for example if you prefer a different Bible or commentary in a window. To replace a book using the drag-and-drop method, follow these steps:

  1. Press Ctrl+B to display the Library Browser.

  2. Click the title of the book or book item you want.

Note: If you click an expandable symbol, the browser category will expand.

  3. Point to your selection and click-and-hold the mouse button.
Your pointer will change from an arrow to a circle with a slash.

  4. While still holding the mouse button down, drag the item to the window of the book you want to replace and release the mouse button.  When you drag the pointer to an active workspace, it will change to an arrow with a book attached.

Note: You can create an additional window by dragging the item to an empty place on the main workspace and then releasing the mouse button.

Caution: If you replace the King James Version (KJV) in the primary Bible window of a Fast-Start workspace, internal links from the Bible to word study resources based on the Strong’s numbering system will not be as easily accessible because Strong’s numbering is based on the KJV and is available directly.

Use the Fast-Start Workspace Windows Effectively

Viewing Window Contents

The Fast-Start workspace windows are arranged so that you can preview the contents of as many windows as possible on your screen and see where the contents change as various links and cross-references are activated.

To view a list of all the windows that are open, click Window from the menu bar.

To view the contents of a specific window better, expand it by clicking the maximize button (single-window square) on the window’s title bar; to collapse an expanded window, click the restore button (double-window square) on the window’s title bar.

To enlarge the window text from its normal size, press Ctrl+Shift+> ; to return the window text to its normal size, press Ctrl+Shift+<.

Viewing Hidden Windows

Some Fast-Start workspace windows may overlap so that all the layers of windows are not visible on your screen at the same time. For example, in the Bible Study Fast-Start workspace, only one of the three possible commentary windows is visible in the lower right quadrant of the screen. To change the visible commentary, click Window from the menu bar and select a different commentary. The new commentary will become the active window.

To view a list of what windows or books are open, click Window on the menu bar. To see a window that currently is not displayed in the workspace, click it from the list of window names.

Understanding the Bible Target Window in Logos

Logos books usually are structured in one of two ways: versified or page-oriented. Versified books have an internal order of arrangement that correlates with other books with the same internal order or contextual references. A versified book window (e.g., Bible, Bible commentary) can be designated as the "Bible Target Window."

Designating a window as the Bible Target Window selects that Bible (or commentary) as the Bible to be used when you click Bible Reference Marks or certain hyperlinks.

The Fast-Start workspaces set a Bible Target Window and also may open another Bible window which will be called the "primary" Bible window. The primary Bible window does not change because it’s assumed that you want to keep your place in your primary Bible while you use the Bible target window to check cross-references and links.

Understanding Links (Hyperlinks, Extra Information Links, KeyLinks, and Window Links)

Links are a general term referring to Logos features that establish relationships between items, instantly go to other locations, or provide additional information. Some links are called "hotspots" because if you click on the text, something will happen. Fast-Start workspaces take full advantage of links.

Most links and "hot spots" in Logos have a visible indicator. The following descriptions are based on the Logos default settings for colored text. However, you can change the color of the colored-text indicators from the Edit menu Preferences... command General tab.

Red or blue text or an asterisk preceding text often indicates a "go to" link (hotspot jump) that instantly will go to another reference or location associated with that text if you click the text. This makes it quick and easy to look up associated information, Bible references or references to other standardized publications. Text that links to Bible references is referred to as a "Reference Mark." Underlined blue text often indicates a "hyperlink" that instantly will go to another location. When the pointer changes to a hand, a click will go to another location. Click the Backtrack button to return to the original location.

Green text often indicates a "popup" link that displays a popup window containing additional information associated with the book, such as translator’s notes, cross-references or abbreviations. Popup windows can be either temporary (regular) or information (floating). Click the colored text to see the additional information; click anywhere to close a temporary popup window or click the close box on an information popup window to close it.

A pointer with an asterisk indicates a word that has extra information associated with it. Extra Information links are another type of hotspot that also results in a popup window. Extra information links are part of the Logos book and they associate the word in the book with one or more other Logos references. Right-click on a word and select Information... from the popup window to discover what extra information is associated with the word.

A paperclip icon or colored label indicates a link with a note that is associated with the text. Click the icon or label to display the note.

KeyLink links are not visibly indicated because they are active anywhere in the book. KeyLinks are a quick way to look up a word or search in other references. KeyLinks associate a word in any "language" that the current book supports with either a default reference or your favorite reference for instant access to it. Right-click on any word and select KeyLink... to look up that word in your KeyLinked reference. If the word exists, the reference will open to the matching article. For example, depending on the settings in your Edit menu Preferences command General and Language tabs, double-click on the English word "earth" and if the KeyLink Lookup is set to Easton’s Bible Dictionary, the dictionary will display the definition. A Strong’s number KeyLink set to the Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon will display the Strong’s reference.

A letter over the chain link in the Link button on the window toolbar indicates that the window is connected with another window with the same letter on its Link button. Window links establish relationships among book windows. Linking windows enables you to move through multiple books in unison. Click the Links button on the window toolbar to set or clear window links.

Icons or buttons on the toolbar can indicate "macro" links. A macro represents an action or series of actions that automatically will occur when the macro button is clicked.

Note: If you’re an experienced user, you can select the icon you want to associate with a function or you can create your own macro.

Click the macro button to perform the action or function that the button represents.
