Overview: Re-install Logos without a LOGOS Backup Disk
The information in this article applies to the following products:
- Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above
Summary
Note: If you are installing Logos simply to update your version of Logos, see the TechResponse article "Upgrade or Update Logos."
Read this article if you need to re-install Logos and you do not have a backup of the Logos system files that store the record of all your book unlocks.
If your Logos Library System (LLS) included only books from one or more collections and you have all your LLS product CD(s) or floppy disks, then re-installation simply requires re-running the Setup program for each LLS product. However, if you unlocked any individual titles since installing your LLS products or if you are missing one or more Setup programs, re-installation will require two parts: re-installing your product CD(s) or floppy disks and then calling each publisher to ask if the publisher can restore or "re-unlock" the books in your library that still are missing. This sometimes can be difficult, time-consuming, and costly. Although unlocks for books purchased from Logos Research Systems, Inc. normally can be recovered, a service fee may be charged. Depending on individual LLS publisher policies, you may need to re-purchase some books to completely restore your library.
When you buy a LLS book and unlock it, the transaction is similar to making a purchase at a bookstore and leaving the store with a hardcover or paperback book. If you lose the book, the bookstore is not obligated to replace the book. Likewise, if you lose the unlock for an electronic book and you do not have a backup, the publisher is not obligated to replace the book. Although customer satisfaction is a priority, electronic book publishers cannot routinely replace books without proof of purchase and remain in business.
We encourage you to make a backup disk every time you unlock a LLS book or collection from any LLS publisher so that re-installing Logos and restoring your library always will be easy, quick, and cost-free.
Symptoms
You may need to re-install Logos for a variety of reasons, including:
- Your computer system fails or "crashes."
- You purchase a new computer.
- You add a new hard disk to your system and you want to move Logos to it.
- You replace a hard disk.
- You deleted the LOGOS20 and/or LRSYSTEM directories/folders or files located in them.
- You have an unrecoverable error when you attempt to start Logos.
- You have a corrupt data file.
Overview Instructions
When you run the Setup program to install a LLS product, usually Setup both installs the Logos software and unlocks the books. As you run Setup for each product, the Setup program may update your Logos software as well as expand the list of books available in your Library Browser. If you do not have a LOGOS Backup Disk, you can re-install Logos and restore your unlocks from each product by running Setup from every LLS product CD or floppy disk set again. However, if you’ve unlocked individual titles that were not in a collection, they will be missing. If you are missing individual titles or if you do not have all your LLS product CDs or floppy disks, you will have to call each LLS publisher to ask about recovering the book unlocks you purchased from that publisher.
A backup is best. If you are re-installing Logos to a new hard disk or computer and your current Logos still runs, first make a backup. Run Logos, insert a blank formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk in your floppy disk drive, and from the Tools menu click Backup Logos System Files.... If you are able to make a backup, then see the TechResponse article "Re-install Logos with a LOGOS Backup Disk" for more detailed instructions.
If your current Logos program does not run or if you are re-installing Logos to the same computer system where your original program was located, make sure that the original Logos software is completely removed from the hard disk. If your system includes files from different installations of Logos, conflicts may occur. If you have corrupted files that are not replaced by the re-installation, problems may persist. To remove or un-install Logos, see the TechResponse article "Remove Logos from the Hard Disk Completely" and then use one of the methods below to re-install Logos.
When you re-install Logos, installing the most current version of Logos available is strongly recommended.
Complete the following instructions as applicable:
Remember that only the books that are unlocked on the CD that currently is in your CD-ROM drive appear in your Library Browser (unless you have books available on a hard disk or network drive). To see books from a different CD, from the File menu click Exit to quit Logos and then insert the new CD in your CD-ROM drive and restart Logos. To make books available without a CD, see the TechResponse article "Relocate LLS Books" or download books from the Internet to your hard disk.
If you re-installed Logos because of problems with the hard disk or because you have a new hard disk or computer, note that books you previously had located on the hard disk will need to be replaced. Books that you may have downloaded from the Logos Web site will need to be downloaded again. Books that you may have copied from a CD to your hard disk will need to be copied again (insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive, run Logos, and from the Tools menu, click Librarian...). If your drives have been renamed, your Logos Filemap must be rebuilt (run Logos, and from the Tools menu, click Rebuild Filemap....
