Overview: Re-install Logos with a LOGOS Backup Disk

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 and above

Summary

With a current LOGOS Backup Disk that has the record of all your unlocked books from all the LLS book publishers where you’ve purchased books, you will be able to re-install Logos and quickly and easily restore or "re-unlock" your unlocked books at no cost.

Note: If you are installing Logos simply to update your version of Logos, see the TechResponse article "Upgrade or Update Logos."

Symptoms

You may need to re-install Logos for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Your computer system fails or "crashes."
  • You purchase a new computer.
  • You add a new hard disk to your system and you want to move Logos to it.
  • You replace a hard disk.
  • You deleted the LOGOS20 and/or LRSYSTEM directories/folders or files located in them.
  • You have an unrecoverable error when you attempt to start Logos.
  • You have a corrupt data file.

Overview Instructions

If your current Logos program does not run or if you are re-installing Logos to the same computer system where your original program was located, make sure that the original Logos software is completely removed from the hard disk. If your system includes files from different installations of Logos, conflicts may occur. If you have corrupted files that are not replaced by the re-installation, problems may persist. To remove or un-install Logos, see the TechResponse article "Remove Logos from the Hard Disk Completely" and then use one of the methods below to re-install Logos.

When you re-install Logos, installing the most current version of Logos available is strongly recommended.

Caution: Re-installing Logos is similar to installing Logos, however do not backup the Logos system files until you have re-installed Logos and restored the system files from your current LOGOS Backup Disk. If you backup your system before you have restored the current Logos system files, the new backup may replace your complete set of system files with an incomplete set.

Read all the instructions first, then complete the set of instructions that applies to you:

  • If you have Internet access, download the most current Logos version update from the Logos Web site at http://www.logos.com/products/update/. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install Logos. When you have downloaded Logos and completed Setup, STOP! DO NOT MAKE A BACKUP. Run Logos. Insert your LOGOS Backup Disk in your floppy drive. From the Tools menu, click Restore System Files from Backup.... Change the default drive and file name if necessary and click OK. Insert a CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart Logos. The books that are available on the CD in your CD-ROM drive should now appear in the Library Browser.

  • If you have a locked LLS book CD Volume 1, run the Update program (UPDATE.EXE) from Volume 1 to install a version of Logos that may be more current than the version on your LLS product CD or floppy disk. If your LLS Collection date is more current than your Volume 1, see the next option. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the Logos update. When Update has completed, run Logos. Insert the LOGOS Backup Disk in your floppy drive. From the Tools menu, click Restore System Files from Backup... . Change the default drive and file name if necessary and click OK. Insert a CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart Logos. The books that are available on the CD in your CD-ROM drive should now appear in the Library Browser.

You can call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS (1-800-875-6467) to obtain a CD-ROM upgrade, which includes the most current locked LLS book CD volumes and Update program.

  • If you have one or more "LLS Collection" products, such as the Bible Reference Series Standard, Intermediate or Deluxe or Scholar’s Library on a CD or floppy disk, run your most recent Setup program (SETUP.EXE) to install Logos. Follow the on-screen prompts to install Logos, BUT DO NOT MAKE A BACKUP. (If you make a backup at this time, it may replace your complete set of unlocks with an incomplete one that includes only the books unlocked by the Setup program you are using.) When Setup has completed, run Logos. If your library included books in addition to the books in the collection on the CD you are using, you will need to restore your Logos system files from the backup to restore your complete set of unlocks. Insert the LOGOS Backup Disk in your floppy drive. From the Tools menu, click Restore System Files from Backup.... Change the default drive and file name if necessary and click OK. With the CD in the CD-ROM drive, restart Logos. The books that are available on the CD in your CD-ROM drive should now appear in your Library Browser.

Remember that only the books that are unlocked on the CD that currently is in your CD-ROM drive appear in your Library Browser (unless you have books available on a hard disk or network drive). To see books from a different CD, from the File menu click Exit to quit Logos and then insert the new CD in your CD-ROM drive and restart Logos. To make books available without a CD, see the TechResponse article "Relocate LLS Books" or download books from the Internet to your hard disk.

If you re-installed Logos because of problems with the hard disk or because you have a new hard disk or computer, note that books you previously had located on the hard disk will need to be replaced. Books that you may have downloaded from the Logos Web site will need to be downloaded again. Books that you may have copied from a CD to your hard disk will need to be copied again (insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive, run Logos, and from the Tools menu, click Librarian...). If your drives have been renamed, your Logos Filemap must be rebuilt (run Logos, and from the Tools menu, click Rebuild Filemap....
