Backup and Restore the Logos 2.0 System Files/
Update Your Logos 2.0 Library on Your Computers

The information in this article applies to the following products:

  • Logos Library System software version 2.0 up to but not including version 2.1

Caution: If you have Logos version 2.1, see "Backup and Restore the Logos 2.1 System Files."

Summary

We strongly recommend that you make a LOGOS Backup Disk every time you unlock a LLS book or collection from any publisher so that you will be able to restore your library if disaster strikes, such as when your hard disk fails or a system file is damaged or deleted. When you run Logos, the Tools menu command Backup Logos System Files... includes both a record of the book unlocks in your library as well as a record of the Logos Filemap (Logos.map). The library system backup is stored by default to a file named Logos.lsb. The Tools menu command Restore System Files from Backup... recovers your book unlocks and Filemap.

Caution: If you fail to maintain a working LOGOS Backup Disk as you unlock additional books, you may call Customer Service at 1-800-875-6467  to help you restore your library and "re-unlock" the books you've purchased from Logos Research Systems, Inc. Although unlocks for books purchased from Logos Research Systems, Inc. normally can be recovered, a service fee may be charged (for example, $15 on SKU #514). Depending on individual LLS publisher policies, you may need to re-purchase some books to completely restore your library. See TechResponse articles "Re-install Logos with a LOGOS Backup Disk" and "Re-install Logos without a LOGOS Backup Disk" for additional information.

When you install Logos on the hard disk of your computer, you also are licensed to install the software to an additional computer, for example to your laptop or to your home computer, as long as the software and books are in use on only one machine at a time. If you need to update the library from one computer to another computer, then complete both the instructions Set A and Set B on the computer where you unlocked the book(s).

Additional Notes

The Logos Library System can be customized to include preferences or settings such as workspaces, associated titles or keylinks and multiple locations for where to search for books. The backup file (Logos.lsb) does not include all these settings. To be able to restore your customized settings as well as your book unlocks, also copy C:\WINDOWS\Logos20.ini (where C: is your hard drive letter name and where LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos) from the original system to the LOGOS Backup Disk. The Logos20.ini and Logos.map files are specific to the computer where they originate, so if you backup the files, make a separate LOGOS Backup Disk for each computer where you have lawfully installed Logos.

Note that in some cases, restoration of the Logos20.ini copy may be unsuccessful if the file is corrupted or if you are not restoring the file to its original system.

Instructions

Keep the LOGOS Backup Disk in a safe place, where it will not be lost or damaged by magnetization, moisture, temperature extremes or dust.

Use the same LOGOS Backup Disk whenever you make a backup of the Logos system files. The backup record is cumulative as you add unlocks to your library. Replace the existing file with the new file to prevent future confusion about which disk to use to restore the system files. (Note: You can make a copy of the backup disk to ensure that you have a working copy if the floppy disk fails. However, make sure to always replace the copy whenever you update your backup disk.) The backup disk(s) may be used only to restore a Logos Library System that you have been legally authorized to install according to the software Licensing Agreement.

Set A - Backup the Logos 2.0 System Files

To make a LOGOS Backup Disk for the computer where you unlock a book or collection, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the LOGOS Backup Disk if you were provided one (or use any blank formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk) in your floppy disk drive.

  2. Run Logos.

  3. From the Tools menu, click Backup Logos System Files....

  4. Make sure the letter name displayed in the Drives: list box is your floppy disk drive letter name, for example a:. To change the drive letter, click the drop-down arrow and then use the smaller up/down arrows to display your floppy drive letter name and click it. Your default Logos system backup file name (Logos.lsb) also should appear in the File name: list box. When you make subsequent backups, click Yes to replace the existing file on your backup disk with the new file.

  5. Click Ok.

Note: Also remember to copy C:\WINDOWS\Logos20.ini and C:\LRSYSTEM\Logos.map (where C: is your hard drive letter name and LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos) to the LOGOS Backup Disk if you want to be able to restore your customized Logos settings and Filemap for the specific computer as well as your unlocks. If you have another computer, make a separate LOGOS Backup Disk for each computer and copy and restore the files to and from only the computer where they originated.

Set B - Backup the Logos Library Only

To backup only your library of books from the computer where you unlocked a new book or collection so that you can restore the updated library to your other computer, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the LOGOS Backup Disk that is for the system where you unlocked your new book or collection and insert the disk in the floppy disk drive of the computer where you unlocked your new book or collection.

  2. From the Windows desktop, click Start and then Find and Files or Folders....

  3. In the Named text entry box, type LRSUSER.DAT.

  5. Click Find Now.

  6. When the search is complete, the file Lrsuser.dat should appear in the Name panel to the left of your screen. Use your mouse to point to the file name and right-click.

  7. Click Send To and 3½ Floppy (A) where A: is your floppy disk drive letter name. If you are updating a previous copy of your Lrsuser.dat file, click Yes to replace the existing file with the new file.

  8. Remove the LOGOS Backup Disk from the drive and skip to the instructions to "Update Your Logos 2.0 Library on Your Other Computer."

  2. Run Logos.

Your default Logos system backup file name (Logos.lsb) should appear in the File name: list box.

  5. Click Yes to replace the existing file in your LOGOS20 directory (where LOGOS20 is the directory where you installed Logos).

  6. Click Ok.

Note if you made a backup of your Logos20.ini: Make sure to use the LOGOS Backup Disk for the specific computer you are restoring. To restore your customized Logos settings from the LOGOS Backup Disk to the computer where the file originated, copy Logos20.ini to your C:\WINDOWS directory (where C: is your hard drive letter name) and click Yes to replace the existing file if necessary.

Update Your Logos 2.0 Library on Your Other Computer

If you have lawfully installed Logos on an additional computer, you will need to update the library on that computer after you unlock a new book or collection on the first computer. If you have not already done so, follow the earlier instructions to "Backup the Logos Library Only" from the computer where you unlocked the new book(s) and then complete the following instructions:

  1. Take the LOGOS Backup Disk from the system where you unlocked the new book or collection to your other computer and insert the disk in the floppy disk drive.

  2. Copy the new Lrsuser.dat file from the LOGOS Backup Disk to the computer’s LRSYSTEM directory or folder (where LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos) and click Yes to replace the existing file with the new file.

To copy the Lrsuser.dat file from your floppy disk to the C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name and LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos), follow the set of steps appropriate for your Windows version:

    1. From Windows 95/98/NT, click Start, Programs and Windows Explorer.
    2. From the Folders panel on the left, select your floppy drive (for example A:/). The Lrsuser.dat file name should appear in the Name panel on the right.
    3. Scroll the Folders panel on the left to where you can see the LRSYSTEM directory folder located under your hard drive root directory (where LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos).
    4. Use your mouse to point to the Lrsuser.dat file icon on the right, then click and hold the button to drag the file and drop it in the LRSYSTEM folder on the left (where LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos).
    5. Click Yes to replace the exiting file with the new file.

    1. From Windows 3.x, double-click Main and File Manager.
    2. Click the A: drive icon (where A: is your floppy disk drive letter name).
    3. Click the Lrsuser.dat file to select it.
    4. From the File menu, click Copy.
A Copy dialog box will appear with the Lrsuser.dat file name in the From: list box.
    5. In the To: box, type C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name and LRSYSTEM is the directory where you installed Logos) and then click Ok.
    6. Click Yes to replace the exiting file with the new file.

  3. Verify the update of your library from your first computer on the additional computer.

Quit Logos if it is running.
Insert the CD where your new books are located in the CD-ROM drive.
    Run Logos.

Your new book(s) should appear in the Library Browser.

  4. If you maintain a separate LOGOS Backup Disk for the computer you just updated, you will need to make a new backup on that disk. Insert the LOGOS Backup Disk for the computer in the floppy disk drive and from the Tools menu, click Backup Logos System Files.... Click Yes to replace the existing Logos system backup (Logos.lsb).

Remember to maintain a separate LOGOS Backup Disk for each computer where you have lawfully installed Logos.
