Install Logos Library System (LLS) for the First Time from a Product CD or Floppy Disk
The information in this article applies to the following products:
- Logos Library System software version 2.1 and above
Summary
This article provides generic step-by-step instructions for running Setup to install a LLS product from a "LLS Collection" product CD or floppy disk(s). Setup both installs the Logos software and unlocks the book collection. If you need assistance with the installation, please call our friendly Technical Support people at (360) 685-2337 during normal business hours. For other types of technical support, send e-mail requests to tech@logos.com.
Caution: Do not attempt to re-install or remove Logos without instructions. If you do not follow instructions, you may inadvertently lose the unlocks for all or some of the books in your library. To protect your investment, always be sure to backup your Logos system files every time you unlock a new book or install a new product from any LLS publisher. Backup instructions are included later in this article. To re-install Logos, see the TechResponse article "Re-install Logos with a LOGOS Backup Disk." For instructions to remove or un-install Logos, see the TechResponse article "Remove Logos from the Hard Disk Completely."
Instructions
Note: Before you begin, take a moment to note your Product Code, for example 001-00680-0104. If your product has a code, it should be on the CD jewel case or paper envelope. If there is a code, you will need to use the code during installation.
To install the Logos software from a product CD or floppy disk(s) and unlock the books you have purchased, follow these steps:
- Close all open programs except Windows, including screensaver and wallpaper programs.
To close all applications programs, click the close box at the upper right corner of every open window. To close screensaver and wallpaper programs, right-click somewhere in your Windows desktop and click Properties and then click Background and Screensaver tabs and select (None) and Apply for each option, then click OK. Re-start Windows. If you have background programs running, they will be represented as icons on right side of your task bar. Right-click the icon and click Exit to quit each program.
Note: To restore your screensaver and wallpaper programs after you install Logos, right-click somewhere in your Windows desktop and click Properties and then click the Background or Screensaver tab. Select the option you want and click Apply. When you have finished selecting options for each tab, click OK. Restart Windows. Your startup background programs will run again when you restart Windows.
- Insert the "LLS Collection" product CD in your computer’s CD-ROM drive, or insert the first installation floppy disk in your computer’s floppy disk drive and insert the LLS book CD volume in the CD-ROM drive.
- Run the Setup program (SETUP.EXE) if the program does not autoplay.
From the Windows 95/98/NT Task Bar, click Start and then Run. From the Windows 3.1 Program Manager, click File and then Run.
Type the drive letter name (including a colon and backslash) and SETUP then click OK to begin the installation program. For example, type: D:\SETUP if you have a CD and your CD-ROM drive is the D: drive. A:\SETUP if you have a floppy disk and your 3.5-inch floppy drive is the A: drive.
Note: To determine the CD-ROM drive letter name in your computer system, from Windows 95/98/NT double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. From Windows 3.1 Program Manager, click the drive box drop-down arrow (the box is directly below the File menu).
Follow the on-screen prompts and use steps 4-9 to guide you. Your prompts may vary depending on what version of Setup you are using and on how your computer system is configured.
- Click OK when you are prompted to select the default directory names C:\LOGOS20 and C:\LRSYSTEM (where C: is your hard drive letter name). You may designate a different drive letter if necessary.
Caution: Although you can change the hard drive letter name, you are strongly cautioned to use the default directory names LOGOS20 and LRSYSTEM to avoid possible confusion. By default, all Logos version 2.x-compatible products are installed to the same directories as existing LLS products in your system and all instructions use these directory names.
- Enter your name, organization information, and the Product Code (see previous note).
- When the program prompts you to confirm that you’ve entered the information correctly, if the information displayed is correct, click Continue. If the information is incorrect, repeat Step 5.
- When the program prompts you to specify the Program Group name where you want the Logos application icons to be installed, click OK to accept the default "Logos Applications."
Note: You may click the drop-down arrow to choose a different group or you may customize a new applications group name by typing and entering it. By default, Logos Research Systems, Inc. products such as the Bible Reference Series, Scholar’s Library, Logos Bible Atlas and Logos Lesson Builder, are installed to the "Logos Applications" program group.
- You may be prompted to change the drive letter to indicate the location of your CD-ROM drive. Type the correct drive letter, for example D:, and then click OK.
- If you entered a product code, register your new software with Logos by calling Customer Service at 800-875-6467.
- When the Installation Complete dialog box appears, click OK to quit the installation program.
A window with the Logos Library System "Books and CD" icon may appear.
- Run Logos. This step verifies your installation and is required to make a backup disk.
Leave the "LLS Collection" CD or LLS book CD volume in the CD-ROM drive. Your new books are located on the CD along with other books that are available for unlocking. (To see book titles that are available for unlocking on the CD that is in your CD-ROM drive, run Logos and from the Tools menu click Unlock Books or Collections....)
Double-click the Logos "Books and CD" icon if the icon is displayed.
To run Logos if you are running Windows 95/98/NT, from the Task Bar select Start and then click Programs, Logos Applications, and Logos Library System.
To run Logos if you are running Windows 3.1 Program Manager, you should see the Logos Applications group. Double-click the group and then double-click the Logos Library System "Books and CD" icon to run Logos.
Note: To run Logos, you also can click Start or File and then Run.... Type the drive letter name (including the colon), the Logos directory name (including the backslash), and LOGOS, then click OK to begin the program. For example, type: C:\LOGOS20\LOGOS (where C: is your hard drive letter name and LOGOS20 is the directory where you installed Logos).
- When you run Logos, the books you purchased that are on the CD in your CD-ROM drive should appear in the Library Browser window at the left of your screen. If they do not appear, you will need to direct Logos where to find the books in your system. (LLS book files are indicated by file name extensions .lsf and .lix.)
From the Tools menu, click Rebuild Filemap... . Verify that the D:\BOOKS directory or folder (where D: is your CD-ROM drive letter name and BOOKS is any named directory on the CD where book files are located) appears in the Search List: list box. If the CD-ROM drive letter does not appear, click the drop-down arrow and select your CD-ROM drive letter from the Drives: list box. Select the books directory or folder from the Directories to Scan: list box and click Add and then Scan, and restart Logos when prompted.
Remember that you may need to rebuild the Filemap if you download or copy books to your hard disk or use books from a drive that is not already included in the Filemap Search List. Note that you can double-click the directories or folders in the Directories to Scan: list box to list specific directories where books may be located, for example D:\BOOKS\VOL5 or C:\LOGOS20\BOOKS. Select a directory or folder where your books are located, then click Add to include it in the Search List. When all directories on all drives where your book files are located have been added to the Search List, click Scan. When prompted, restart Logos.
Warning: If Logos does not successfully start or if the unlocked books that are on the CD in your CD-ROM drive do not appear, call Technical Support at (360) 685-2337. Do not remove and re-install Logos. If you had problems installing Logos, you may be asked to find the Setup.log file in your LOGOS20 directory. Setup.log is a text file that is created or modified to record what the Setup program does as it runs on your system.
- Make a LOGOS Backup Disk. Make a backup every time you unlock a LLS book or collection from any publisher so that you will be able to restore your library if disaster strikes, such as when your hard disk fails or a system file is damaged or deleted. Keep the disk in a safe place, where it will not be lost or damaged by magnetization, moisture, temperature extremes or dust.
Caution: If you fail to maintain a working LOGOS Backup Disk as you unlock additional books, you may call Customer Service at 1-800-87LOGOS (1-800-875-6467) to help you try to restore your library and "re-unlock" the books you’ve purchased from Logos Research Systems, Inc. You will pay a service fee (for example, $15 on SKU #514) and you may not be able to restore your entire library without a backup disk.
For complete instructions, see the TechResponse article "Backup and Restore the Logos System Files."
To make a LOGOS Backup Disk, follow these steps:
- Insert the LOGOS Backup Disk if you were provided one (or use any blank formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk) in your floppy disk drive. If you use a blank disk, label and date the disk to avoid confusion later.
- Run Logos.
- From the Tools menu, click Backup Logos System Files....
- Make sure the letter name displayed in the Drives: list box is your floppy disk drive letter name, for example a:. To change the drive letter, click the drop-down arrow and then use the smaller up/down arrows to display your floppy drive letter name and click it. Your default Logos system backup file name (Logos.lsb) also should appear in the File name: list box. When you make subsequent backups, click Yes to replace the existing file on your backup disk with the new file.
- Click Ok.
(When the backup is completed, you can quit Logos. From the File menu, click Exit.)
You now are ready to use your Logos Library System. Congratulations!
Remember that only the books that are unlocked on the CD that currently is in your CD-ROM drive appear in your Library Browser (unless you have books available on a hard disk or network drive). To see books from a different CD, from the File menu click Exit to quit Logos and then insert the new CD in your CD-ROM drive and restart Logos. To make books available without a CD, see the TechResponse article “Relocate LLS Books”.
If you have Logos version 2.1f or above and your LLS product Setup includes predefined workspaces, for example the Bible Reference Series or Scholar’s Library, try using a Fast-Start Workspace when you run Logos. From the File menu, click Load workspace... and double-click the workspace name you want to use for the type of work you want to do.
